A Lesson In Safety (Plus a Giveaway!)

Posted by Caryn Bailey 31 Comments

*Update*

This giveaway is now closed.  Thank you so much for stopping by.  The winner is Sandy.  Congratulations!

I never realized how difficult keeping up with a toddler could be.  Now that he’s running walking, I’m getting plenty of exercise keeping him out of harm’s way.  His natural curiosity about the world results in the constant influx of foreign objects into his mouth.

We just bought a house, and from the looks of it, babyproofing is going to be a lot more challenging than the one bedroom apartment we’ve been living in.  My son has a fascination with putting his finger in places he shouldn’t including other people’s mouths and noses, DVD players and outlets.  Naturally, I’m planning on placing outlet covers over those outlets that my son will be able to reach.

Did you know that conventional outlet caps like these pose a significant choking hazard?  George DeCell, founder of SafetyCaps, has a daughter who choked on a standard-sized electrical outlet safety plug. Placing objects in the mouth is a normal part of childhood development.  Parents must be diligent about ensuring children under the age of 3 do not have access to objects small enough to fit into a roll of toilet paper.

SafetyCaps measure 2 1/4 ” wide and are significantly larger than conventional counterparts which measure 1 3/8 ” wide.  The founder gleaned inspiration for his patented design from U.S. Government pacifier anti-choking safety regulations.  SafetyCaps also contain an added safety measure…air holes (like those on pacifiers) to ensure your child won’t choke on them.

So how would your child even pull one of these off the wall to get it into his/her mouth?  We are all only human and I myself have been guilty of accidently leaving something around that has ended up in my son’s mouth (fortunately with no ill effects).  Had I known about SafetyCaps I would never have spent money on conventional covers that my son can choke on.

One Whole House Solution contains 48 SafetyCaps and retails for $10.99.  Save $1.00 when you recommend the site to three friends.

Win It!  I have a 10 pack of SafetyCaps to giveaway to one lucky reader.  This will get you started on replacing the ones you have.  Just leave a comment here telling me if you’ve ever had a choking scare with your child and you’re entered.  Comments will close on October 30, 2008 at 10 pm PST and I will announce the winner here the following day. One comment per person, please. US residents only. Duplicates and comments not including the above information will be disqualified. Comments are moderated. If you don’t see your comment in a reasonable amount of time, send me an email. Bloggers and non-bloggers may enter. If you don’t want to leave your email address, please be sure to check back for my announcement on the winner. Please note that winners must respond within 48 hours of being announced/contacted or another winner will be drawn.

Want an extra entry? Do any or all of the following and receive an extra entry for each one.  That means you can gain up to a total of three entries!

Be sure to leave me a separate comment for each additional entry.

Okay, now you’ve scared me! I have those “bad” outlet covers. I didn’t think he could choke on them.

He hasn’t choked on anything yet, but not for lack of trying. We have been lucky enough to get there in time to stop him!

Both of my kids could pull those conventional outlet plugs out by the time they were 18 months old! I’ve been telling people for years that they were a choking hazard! I’m glad someone has finally made a product that addresses the issue. 🙂

When my son was 9 months old, his grandma gave him banana pieces that were too large, and he started to choke in my arms! A terrifying experience! Thankfully, I had the presence of mind to do a finger sweep, and the terror only lasted a few seconds.

I have never had a choking scare with my child, but when I was an infant my father (bless him he was trying) gave me a round peppermint, the kind you get from a restaurant when you leave. I choked and he had to pull over and beat me on the back to get it out of my airway, I still can’t stomach them.

Thanks so much for this giveaway. Yes, we had a choking scare with my oldest son. He was eating one of those icepops that come in the clear wrap and you freeze. While pushing it up, he sucked in and a chunk lodged in his throat. I had to grab him from behind and press into his chest to get it out. What a scare! Never brought those type of icepops again.
Thanks again, I’d love to win this for my baby. Thanks.

I haven’t had any “real” scares but he has put stuff in his mouth enough times for my heart to about jump out of my throat!! I’ve thought the same things about my outlet covers, but I haven’t seen any bigger ones before – now that I have, I want them!!

We did have a choking scare with our oldest involving something larger than would fit in a toilet paper tube. Be careful, parents! Thanks for the contest.

We were in a restaurat and my 14 year old aspirated a piece of steak. My 21 year old did the Heimlich maneuver and saved his life.

I had a very close call with my oldest when he was just a babe. He gnawed off a piece of a teething biscuit and began to choke. Luckily his father was there and was able knock him on his back and dislodge the piece. Very scary and it still makes me paranoid with my kids. What a great product!
