A Healthier Choice?

Posted by Caryn Bailey 2 Comments

Admittedly, I’m a bit of a health nut. Last week I was out with a friend who asked me if I ever splurge and eat something “bad” like hot dogs.  Sadly, I don’t.  I’ve gotten so accustomed to not eating that way, that I don’t even have cravings for foods like hamburgers or fries. I strive to offer my family home-cooked meals, but there are times when both my husband and I don’t want to cook.  We tend to be foodies, which means eating out is often quite expensive, even for a small family of four.

Freshly prepared meals and frozen dinners are inexpensive alternatives to eating out.  However, they’re traditionally known to be high in fat, calories, sodium, and artificial ingredients.  Healthy Choice recently launched their new line of steaming entrees.  Designed to be eaten for lunch, these frozen microwaveable meals are made with simple, fresh ingredients.

I’m not quite sure how they achieved steaming in the microwave, but I’m convinced that it works.  I don’t think I’ve seen a frozen meal look this good!

Steaming (achieved with their steam-release vent in the film) unlocks the fresh taste and vibrant flavors of the ingredients. The meals cook in about four minutes without the need to alter the film or stir during cook time.

I had an opportunity to try the Lemon Herb Chicken and Chicken Romano Fresca meals.  I typically eat light during lunch and found the portion sizes to be just enough to keep me satiated, but not overly full.  I like the fact that I can identify the ingredients listed on the package and I’m content with the meals’ nutritional profile.  The meals are around 200 calories and low in fat.  I’m certain it’s difficult to keep sodium levels down in prepared foods.  The meals contain about 25% of the daily recommendation for sodium, so I would reserve these for the occasional meal.

The recipes are modern and tasty and something I’d likely cook up at home with the appropriate amount of time.  You can find Healthy Choice Steaming Entrees in the frozen section of your grocery store for $2.50.

I wrote this review while participating in a blog campaign by Mom Central on behalf of Healthy Choice and received samples of their new steaming entrées to facilitate my candid review. Mom Central also sent me a gift card to thank me for taking the time to participate.

I purchased a lot of these when we were in Oklahoma last year four hubby to work. He really liked taking them for his lunch!
