A Bronx Tale at Segerstrom Center for the Arts

My connection to The Bronx is personal. My parents met and fell in love in New York’s populous borough, and I still have family who call it home. As New York’s Northernmost borough, it is home to the New York Yankees, is the birthplace of hip-hop, and draws visitors across the globe to the Bronx Zoo and the New York Botanical Garden. The Bronx also sets the scene for Chazz Palminteri’s autobiographical, one-man show A Bronx Tale. The musical, which premiered in LA during the ’80s, will perform at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts this Spring.

A Bronx Tale

Written and performed by Chazz Palminteri, the autobiography tells the story of Calogero Anello, a young New Yorker caught between the father he loves and the mob boss he aspires to be. Set in the 1960s, A Bronx Tale evolved from Palminteri’s one-man show. While performing, Robert De Niro saw the show and brought the story and Palminteri to the screen in 1993, also launching his directorial debut. The film was successful, and Palminteri eventually performed A Bronx Tale on Broadway in 2007. De Niro also directed a musical version which opened in 2016 on Broadway and ran through December 2018. The musical features an original “doo-wop” score and inspires with its story about love, loyalty, respect, and family.
