Having gone to church most of life, my familiarity with Hillsong consisted of singing their music Sunday mornings or listening to their music on my iPod while I finished homework. When I lived in Edinburgh, I had a number of opportunities to travel, and one particular summer I spent a month in London and checked off an item on my bucket list…to experience a Hillsong worship service!
Hillsong – Powerful Praise
Since then, I’ve experienced this powerful worship experience live in New York and Los Angeles and the power that is present in those services. Hillsong Church was founded in 1983 by Brian and Bobbie Houston and now spans the globe with 14 locations including London, Paris, Stockholm, Capetown and Moscow. While best known for their worship music and the band, Hillsong United, the church is also involved in worldwide ministry where they rescue victims of human trafficking, feed and educate children in India, and build houses for those living with AIDS in Africa.
This week, the long anticipated documentary, Hillsong – Let Hope Rise, will debut in select theaters nationwide. The film details how the 11-member band United rose to distinction as an international church with songs that are sung by more than 50 million people worldwide. The film is a composite of live performances and back-stage narratives about the joys and challenges faced along their journey.
