7 Red Carpet Makeup Tips Any Woman Can Recreate

Posted by Caryn Bailey 10 Comments

I remember the days when I had ample time to primp and ready myself for the day.  My hair alone can take 30-45 minutes if I’m planning on using the flat iron, so you can imagine how much time I’d spend making myself presentable before I had children.  As a busy mother of two, I’m lucky if I can get just a little bit of make-up on before heading out the door. On those days, when I only have time for a quick make-up session, I prioritize.  Moisturizer, a light foundation, eyeliner, and lipstick are my going out essentials.

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of spending the day with a group of lifestyle and food bloggers in LA for an awesome red carpet viewing party with I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter!  Along with getting an opportunity to speak with Brooke Burke, Carson Kressley, and Molly Sims, the hosts of the red carpet show Toast to the Red Carpet, we sat down with lifestyle and culinary expert Katie Lee, who shared the inspiration behind her best picture nominee-inspired recipes. Later this week I’ll share more of our day at Siren Studios and the W Hotel.

The fabulous Romy from Romy Raves. Was hoping some of her lifestyle mojo would rub off on me!

Part of our afternoon was spent with celebrity makeup artist Terri Apanasewicz, who gave us some fantastic tips on creating our own red carpet look.  If you follow me on Twitter, you might have seen them, but I’ll share them here because I was surprised at how attainable they are and how feasible it is to use makeup to enhance one’s beauty:

1.   Less is more.  Use makeup to enhance rather than create beauty. The less you wear, the less you will have to maintain.

2.  Trends are meant to inspire and not necessarily be followed

3.  Don’t neglect your eyebrows which frame your eyes

4.  After you put on eyeliner, smudge it (to soften the edge) and set it with a complimentary or more intense powder for a lasting wear

5.  Apply blush to the apples of the cheeks

6.  Take care of your skin

7.  Whatever you do, own it!

During my time with the makeup artist, I was introduced to several new lines including VS (Victoria’s Secret), Sonia Kashuk, ‘tini beauty, and Amazing Cosmetics.  After toning down my eye makeup with a more natural look, she applied a tinge of blush and the most vibrant red lipstick from NARS (I wrote it down so I can go back and buy it!). Erika from In Erika’s Kitchen took an incredible photograph of me:

Terri has created looks for a number of celebrity clients including Cindy Crawford, Lady Antebellum, Gisele Bundchen, Faith Hill, and many others.  I love her approach which is to enhance a woman’s natural beauty so they can be “the best version of themselves.”

LA food and lifestyle bloggers toast after receiving their red carpet makeovers

Stay tuned for some incredibly delicious recipes inspired by the best picture nominees.

No compensation was received for this post.  I was invited to a media event and was provided with products and experiences which helped facilitate this review.

That photo IS amazing! You look fantastic, as do all the ladies. I also love the photo of you and my girl Romy.

Those makeup tips are nice – they make it sound so easy – but I don’t think they will help hide my wrinkles or the fatigue-related dark circles under my eyes. I suppose I should own them as battle scars of parenting.

WOW – You look amazing! These are great tips, too. I’m embarrassed just thinking about what I look like some days, running out the door to do school drop-offs. I’m inspired to pay a little more attention to these things now…

I love the one about makeup trends are to be inspired not necessarily followed. Took me back to my blue eyeliner, coral lipstick days. You look so good!! Love the pic of you and Romy.

    You look gorgeous!

And I always want to wear red lipstick- it looks awful on me….but that doesn’t stop me! 😉 (you pull it off wonderfully, though)

I agree about the eyebrows! Instant facelift when those babies are properly groomed.
