I love that in one year, I can see contemporary, classic, and family-friendly Broadway productions without having to travel nearly 3,000 miles. Orange County’s own Segerstrom Center for the Arts has become the destination for national tours of some of the most popular Broadways shows.
Perfectly timed for the coming holiday season, the acclaimed arts institution will present the Tony Award-winning musical 42nd Street. Based on the novel by Bradford Ropes and Busby Berkeley’s 1933 film, the musical tells the story of a aspiring artist Peggy Sawyer, who leaves her home in Allentown to audition for a brand new Broadway musical in New York. When the lead breaks her ankle, Peggy is perfectly positioned to take over and become a star. This story, which mirrors Broadway in both script and form, tells of a young woman’s pursuit of the American Dream.
The original production of 42nd Street debuted in 1980 and has since been revised, although the production by and large retains the music, story and heart that made it so popular 35 years ago.
42nd Street debuts at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts on Tuesday, November 10th, 2015. Single tickets are priced at just $29.
