Girl Scout Cookie Season Is Here! Published on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 by

Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

I was one of them…a girl scout.  I wore the green uniform, proudly displaying my patches and selling Thin Mints to my mom’s friends. Girl Scouts is a positive organization that helps girls build character and life skills.  I am so proud to say that I was a part of it.

Girl Scout Cookie Season has just begun (January 9th) and that means, you’ll find little girls in blue, brown, and green uniforms selling cookies all over the country.  Selling cookies is one such activity that helps “promote financial skills such as goal setting, decision-making, customer-service, and money management.”  Proceeds from sales benefit local troops.

This season, Girl Scouts across the country will be selling the following eight cookie varieties:  Lemon Chalet Creme, Trefoils, Do-Si-Dos, Samoas, Dulce de Leche, Tagalongs, Thin Mints, and Thank U Berry Munch (their newest cookie).  I had a chance to try their newest cookie, and by the empty box, you can imagine how good they are.  Hubby came home the other night and held up the empty box, looking at me in disbelief.  I didn’t even save him one.  Oops. I’m pregnant nursing.

Thank U Berry Munch cookies are made with real cranberries (which add a bit of tartness to the cookie) and sweetened with creamy, white fudge chips.  They’re crunch comes from the crispy rice they’re made with. The cookies are a nice combination of sweet and tart (but more sweet than tart).   They’re seriously delicious (and I’m not exaggerating).  The cookies don’t contain any saturated fat (yeah!), high fructose corn syrup, or hydrogenated oils.  But they are cookies, so don’t eat the whole box like I did…K?

So when are the Girl Scouts in your area going to be selling cookies?  Just check out their Cookie Locator!  And Operation Cookie is in effect.  Consider purchasing a box (or even a case) of cookies from your local Girl Scout troop and donate the box (es) to troops overseas.

I did not receive compensation for this post.  I did receive a product, courtesy of the company, in order to facilitate my review.

I just bought a box of thin mints from a girl scout this past Sunday and your post reminded me that I had them…so I now I am sitting here, typing and eating them. :)

MMMMM Frozen Thin Mints… I cannot wait. They are my downfall. I am gonna be in trouble. And thanks for mentioning Operation Cookie, it is a wonderful program for the troops!

Around here, they’ve changed the names of a bunch of them. Apparently a few years back a couple of the Bluebonnet councils merged and they went with what the other group was using. I think the Do-Si-Dos say peanut butter sandwich cookies or something. Pretty sure the trefoils just say shortbread cookies. They added some called Lemonades a year or two ago; not positive if that’s the same as Lemon Chalet Creme. The Lemonades are big shortbread cookies with lemon icing on one side; they’re really good. There’s also one called Thank Yous that are big shortbread cookies with chocolate on one side, also really good; I guess in our region we have that instead of Thank You Berry Munch, and I’ve got to say the chocolate ones are fantastic and I’m glad we got those here instead of the cranberry ones (although if they want to just keep adding flavors that would be fine). They’ve renamed the Samoas to Caramel Delites and the Tagalongs to peanut butter patties. The only ones here that still have the cookie names I remember from when I was in Girl Scouts are thin mints. They’ve got a new reduced-fat flavor here called Daisy Go Rounds. Anyhow, if you click Girl Scout Cookie Season in the product review on this site, it has a cookie locator that has you enter your zip code and then you can click Meet the Cookies, and it gives you the information for your area. I bought two boxes the other day from some girls sitting at the grocery store and then I bought another box yesterday when I saw some Girl Scouts freezing their butts off outside of Walmart (about 32 degrees out which is cold for Texas).

I was just looking on the Girl Scout cookie site and I had the name slightly wrong on the yummy chocolate-coated shortbread cookies. They’re called Thanks-A-Lot. I found information about them at http://www.abcsmartcookies.com/cookies_nutrition.asp?id=02E8EFF9-9143-405E-8CE9-890CCE9241AC . It looks like each Girl Scout council sells 8 varieties but which exact ones (and what they call them) depends on your local area.
