One of my favorite tips to staying cool and healthy is to make up yummy fruit smoothie pops. Just mix up your favorite smoothie, freeze in popsicle molds, and enjoy! Also- try putting a banana on a stick and freezing that for a perfect and easy snack!

My survive-summer tip is to fill a spritzer-type bottle and keep it in the fridge… when you get too hot, take it out and spritz your face & neck… It really helps. (if recycling an empty bottle of non-cleaning product, just make sure it’s thoroughly cleaned…)

My best summer tip is to get outside first thing in the morning, when the air isn’t as hot! Plus this helps me get going in the morning and not waste away the nice days inside!

  • by Nancye Davis June 27, 2009 at 7:40 pm

Summer Tip: Don’t just apply sunscreen one time, re-apply OFTEN. I got a very serious sun burn one summer when I did not re-apply. I really paid for it.

Have a big family gathering – eat, laugh, and be merry. Just did that today – family is rarely all together. It was hard work, lots of prep, and just got done mopping the floor, not to mention more expensive than our budget allows – but everyone had a good time with all the baby/toddler cousins together and that is all the matters in the end.

My tip is to always bring a thermos or sports bottle filled with ice water, every time you go somewhere in the summer, even if you’re just running errands. Little ones get really thirsty when it’s hot out, and it will save you time and money if you already have cold water to give them, and don’t have to buy a bottled water.

My Summer Tip is to always make sure your kids have adult supervision when playing near or in any type water. (i.e., lake, beach, pool) because it only takes 2 seconds for a child to drown. Please be safe this summer.

  • by Melissa Picone June 28, 2009 at 8:00 am
  • by Nicole Ibarrondo June 28, 2009 at 8:00 am

Here’s a silly one. Since we don’t have a full-size pool, only a baby pool, watching my daughter stay cool in the heat can be sort of a tease. So I prop up a chair right next to her pool, stick an umbrella in the ground and keep my legs in her pool, lol. Not only do I stay cool, but I could keep an eye on her in the pool without having to put on a bathing suit *gasp*

Another tip – I always keep a bag of beach stuff in my car. A pail, a shovel, a towel, an extra outfit for my daughter, and a big ziploc bag for wet bathing suits.

  • by Jennifer June 28, 2009 at 8:02 am

My favorite summer tip is to make sure the kids get out of the house – and not sit in front of the computer or tv all day. There are so many options, even if money is tight – public swimming pools, the park, library, etc.

MY favorite summer tip is to build up a sweat to cool down. It sounds counterintuitive, but it works. What I do is leave the A/C off (saves $$ too!), work my behind off all day (doing housework and taking care of the kids), and sweat profusely. Then, right before my hubby gets home, I close the windows, turn on the A/C, take a tepid shower, and sit down with a cool drink. Ahhhh…I accomplish a lot, but also give myself permission to sit and relax and be lazy at the end of the day—it’s great.

We have a gathering with family each holiday through the summer from Memorial Day through Labor Day. We play volleyball, baseball…or whatever comes up. I usually make slow cooker sloppy joes and shaved ham that stays in the slow cooker all day on low and potato salad, shrimp salad and jello that is in a cooler on ice so people can eat throughout the day as they please.

In the summe I keep frozen fruit in the freezer at all times. We use it as edible ice cubes in lemonade and tea, as great pick me up fruit snacks, in smoothies and slushie drinks, and occasionally in ziplock baggies as ice packs for kids who get boo boos. When the kids crave candy, I give them a handful of frozen cherries, strawberries or blueberries and that does the trick.

My summer tip is to keep your water cold when going to the beach/pool put in the freezer the night before then use as an ice pack and drink as it thaws out. By the time you want to drink them they will be already melting and slushy and really cold ~ which is great on a hot summer day!

Also always use sunscreen and reapply often!

Take a cue from the Spanish and siesta during the heat of the day! Obviously if you’ve got a 9-5 this doesn’t work, but if you’ve got a flexible schedule, drop the Protestant work ethic from June-August- most things can be done just as well at four PM as at noon. Stay inside and (if you can) catch some zzzzs from 11-2, when the UV and heat indexes are through the roof.

If you leave plastic bottles in your car with your beverage of choice in them (even water) do not drink them. Sitting in the hot sun creates bad for you yukkies that you’ll end up drinking. Opt for stainless steel instead.

    Give them something to remember.

  • by Debra F July 6, 2009 at 6:33 pm

My tip….if you have smaller kids that like to swim, but can’t afford a real pool, get one of those 4 foot blow up pools. They are not very expensive and they will be entertained for hours each day.

I worked at Disney World many years ago, and I got off work at the hottest point in the day, about 2:30 in the afternoon. After being outside all day, I felt hot, sweaty and disgusting. When I got home, I’d take a warm shower to clean off, but then I’d turn the hot water off and rinse in cold water. It was very refreshing and something I use to this day to get cool on a hot day.

My other tip, if you live near the Atlantic or Gulf Coast, stock up on a few canned goods and batteries now, just in case a hurricane comes.

I’ll definitely be implementing these helpful suggestions when I go on vacation with my family in a couple weeks. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • by Heather E July 11, 2009 at 9:48 am

Take a watermelon and cut a small round hole on its side. Pour a 750ml bottle of vodka into the watermelon and cover the hole back up. Let watermelon sit over night in frig. Slice up and have the best watermelon you have ever eaten. Even if it isn’t good you think it will be good because of all the alcohol.

  • by Barbara Long July 11, 2009 at 3:00 pm

My tip is to stay well hydrated if you are going to be outside for awhile. Always have water available and don’t wait until you are thirsty to drink it.

  • by Jean Parks July 11, 2009 at 3:09 pm

My best tip is to remember that your kids are only kids once, get them out, to the beach, park or the zoo, just sit out on the porch or in the yard together, count stars, explore tide pools, enjoy an ice cream with your little ones.. the dirty laundry and the dust bunnies will be there when you return.

Have a healthy, happy, wonderous summer and thank you for this give away.

  • by joanna smith July 11, 2009 at 3:11 pm

We love to entertain in the summer and have lots of barbeques. Very often the kids feel left out as the parents (us) sit and tend to the grill, make drinks and just get caught up in grown up conversations. Two very inexpensive ways to keep the kids entertained are buying lots of chalk because the little girls love to play hop scotch using the sidewalk in our backyard that leads down to the lake and the little boys love playing horseshoes. These are 2 quick, easy, no set up involved ways to keep your kids having fun, staying active, and in sight of where you can see them and still have some adult fun too! Thank you so much for the chance to enter.

Everyone has already stated the obvious tips so my best tip for the Summer is…

Travel and visit friends and family while we have the lovely weather. Be sure to get out and enjoy the parks and nature during the Summer months because for many of us, we will have to deal with the Winter months soon enough. Take advantage of all the outdoor activities you can while you have the chance.

This Summer has been a beautiful one here in Ohio and I am loving every minute of it!

Summer Tip: Take each day as it comes. Enjoy the time you have & don’t take anything for granted. Play outdoors in the sprinkler – Get that ice cream cone from the ice cream man, have water balloon fights, play hide & go seek with your kids…..these are the days that create lasting memories.
