One of the ways our family connects is through regular movie nights. After a busy week filled with school and sports, you’ll often find us relaxing at home with one of our favorite animated flicks. However, we also enjoy an early evening out at the theater, although there are times when finding wholesome, engaging entertainment is challenging.
As a Christian, I have loved seeing the integration of faith in films. Up until recently, faith-based films have targeted adult audiences. Providence Film Partners latest release, Yellow Day, weaves animation and live action film techniques to tell a compelling story of grace and faith that is fitting for the entire family.
Inspired by true stories, Yellow Day tells the story of one man’s transformative journey in search of the mysterious woman he meets and falls in love with during a chance meeting at a church. But this search for the love of his life becomes a spiritual journey, compelling him to face his fears, revealing true heroes, and challenging him to become a better man.
The stories of these real-life heroes overcoming special needs, chronic illness and domestic abuse originate from Camp Grace, which is located in Mobile, Alabama and serves as the backdrop for the film. Real-life camper Krisanna Roberts story inspired the production of Yellow Day. Battling terminal cancer at just 15 years old, Krisanna learned that she had just 6 months to live. Her doctors asked her to name a color for the days she felt well and her choice was yellow. For Krisanna, yellow was not a day where everything went right, but a day where she chose grace and joy irrespective of her circumstances. Most of Krisanna’s last days were lived in yellow and she was known for wishing those around her a “bright sunshiny yellow day.”
The film is surprisingly moving, yet approaches topics that parents may shy away from discussing with their children with hope and redemption. At Camp Grace, “lives are changed and souls are strengthened.” Yellow Day artistically brings the stories of these everyday heroes to life on-screen, inspiring families with the message that grace can transform any situation into one of hope.
