Nearly 8 years ago, I opened my laptop and began documenting the story of my little boy and the birth of our family. It was a simple blog, mostly comprised of photos and quips about being a first-time attachment parent on a journey towards living a healthy, more sustainable lifestyle. Slowly, my audience grew beyond my family, as like-minded moms shared my passion for raising a generation of empathetic, confident, eco-conscious human beings. In addition to finding my voice (which is constantly evolving), I created a small business. As I shared my journey with a much wiser, older woman at my church, she celebrated my skills as an entrepreneur, validating my business as more than just a hobby.
As a woman, I know the stats surrounding our place in the labor force. Women-owned businesses contribute over $1.3 trillion dollars to the US economy and women are responsible for over 80% of consumer decisions across the globe. And when it comes to shopping at Walmart, the majority of the company’s 250 billion customers globally are women. Our influence is growing and that is something to be recognized and celebrated while continuing to raise awareness about our knowledge, skills, and influence.
Three years ago, Walmart launched their global Women’s Economic Empowerment which aims to improve the lives of women around the world. Part of that commitment involves sourcing $20 BILLION from women-owned companies by 2017. As a female small-business owner, this is not only exciting, it once again showcases Walmart as a leader in this space.
In honor of Women’s History Month, Walmart will feature 6 different items manufactured by women-owned companies including Milo’s Sweet Tea, Budget Saver Popsicles, CLR Remover, Smart & Sexy Bras, Carter’s Infant Shoes, and Hefty Trash Can. It comes as a welcomed surprise to learn that behind these well-known, national brands is a woman. But Walmart’s inventory of products certified by the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council and WEConnect International is not limited to these 7 products. In order to hold this certification, a business must be at least 51% owned by women AND ran by a woman. In-stores and online, you’ll find over 10,000 products holding this certification in the categories of apparel, baby items, beauty, health, video gaming, jewelry, electronics, food, home and patio/garden.
