Winnie The Pooh

Posted by Caryn Bailey Leave a Comment

He’s back! And he’s cuddlier and hungrier than ever. Winnie the Pooh opened in theaters last week with it’s clever and humorous story and heartwarming characters. Pooh has always been my favorite Disney character so I went in to preview the film with high expectations. The adorable full-length film, with a story line inspired by three of A.A. Milne’s stories, was produced in Disney’s classic, hand-drawn art style and is a delight for the entire family.

From the beginning, you know that this film is unlike any before it.  The live-action opening scene begins in Christopher Robin’s bedroom with Pooh and his plush friends, and there is a classic feel to the film established from the onset. We are reminded both at the onset and throughout the film that these characters and their stories are brought to life by the imagination of a child.

It’s just another day in the Hundred Acre Wood…Pooh’s tummy is rumbling more so than usual since he’s exhausted his supply of honey. As he sets out to find the golden delight, he encounters a gloomier than usual Eeyore who’s lost his tail. After a hilarious interlude between Owl and Pooh about “the thing to do,” Pooh and his friends decide to join together to hold a contest to see who can find the missing tail.

As the story unfolds, Pooh finds a note from Christopher Robin that is misinterpreted by Owl.  The “Backson,” a horrible monster who lives in the woods, has taken young Christopher Robin.  The gang’s efforts to find Eeyore’s tail are temporarily halted in order to lure the Backson into a hole to trap him.  Eventually, Christopher Robin appears and clarifies that his note simply stated that he would be “back soon.” It is Pooh who eventually finds Eeyore’s missing tale, and despite the rumbling in his tummy, decides that friendship is more important.

One of the film’s strengths lies in the fact that the characters maintain continuous interaction with the narrator, always reminding the audience that this is a story…in a book.  I absolutely adored the fact that the characters pop in and out of the book and even interact with the letters.  The story is simple enough for even a young child like my son to understand, but carries a deeper lesson about friendship.

Winnie the Pooh will warm your heart!  See it in theaters this weekend.

No compensation was received for this post. I was invited to a preview of the film which helped to facilitate this review.
