I want to tell you about the women who’ve confided in me, fearful after physical and emotional boundaries in their relationships had been violated, to give a face to Domestic Violence. But those very details are ones that can’t be shared out of respect for those women…to shield the friends who trusted me as their confidant with some of the most hurtful and intimate details of their lives from any additional suffering.
The Statistics
When I think of Domestic violence, my mind instantly goest back to my very first boyfriend and the anger he would often unleash on me. I feel fortunate that his anger never escalated to the point of abuse, but the fear I felt in that relationship was unacceptable. Domestic violence impacts men (1 in 4), women (1 in 3) and children (3 million each year) , and I imagine despite the staggering statistics, many more suffer in silence, their stories never told.
Providing Hope for Victims
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and to shed light on a subject that can feel isolating, I want to highlight a valuable resource for men, women and children in crisis. HopeLine from Verizon connects survivors of domestic violence to vital resources. Their efforts include supporting organizations and agencies that prevent domestic violence, educating communities on cultivating healthy relationships and empowering victims and survivors with resources and tools for success. HopeLine is able to do this by collecting used wireless phones, chargers and accessories to donate to Verizon which in turn uses them to provide support in the form of cash grants. In the last 14 years since the organization’s launch, HopeLine has donated more than 190,000 phones and awarded millions of dollars in cash grants to non-profit organizations and agencies. In addition to the funds generated, the wireless phones donated to shelters and organizations provide victims with a means to communicate privately with trusted family, friends and employers
How You Can Help
If you are looking for a meaningful way to spread awareness and show your support for Domestic Violence this month, I encourage you to “go purple.” All month long, you can visit your local Verizon store or shop online to purchase exclusive purple wireless accessories including a headset, phone or tablet case. HopeLine will donate $1 up to $100,000 to the National Domestic Violence Hotline from every purchase.

i already knew about this, but since i have personally gone through this from 17-19 yrs old, its too important for me to not share,”Dating violence is a type of intimate partner violence. It can be physical, emotional, or sexual in nature”
I assumed since we weren’t married, it didnt count as abuse and always forgave, thankfully some things happened to where my eyes were opened and i asked my sister to please let me move in, i started life in a new place and havent looked back, best decision ever. its hard to leave, but its ALWAYS the best choice, so if anyone sees this, yes it will be hard, im sure harder if theres children involved, but do it for them and yourself, you & them little ones deserve the best, ask for help and things will get better.
