It wasn’t until I was in my early twenties that I started leaving the comforts of home to venture out and see the world. I had just graduated college and my dreams were big. I wanted to visit all of the places I had read about in books and studied in school. It really didn’t take long to decide that my travel adventures would start in Europe. Sometimes there are benefits to being an only child. That trip ignited a passion within me to see as much of the world as possible.
A few weeks ago, while I was scrolling through Facebook, I noticed the status update of one of my friends: The Travel List Challenge. How many have you been to? I was intrigued. My husband and I lived in Europe for almost one year and traveled extensively, so I was curious to see how many of the places listed we had visited. Out of 100 “must-see” places, we have frequented thirty-five of them. I know that most people have not even visited half of that number, and yet I’m still compelled to go, do, and see more. At the end of my life, I want to look back with fond memories, knowing I saw the world.
I’m starting a new series this week, highlighting some of those near and far places that hold a special place in my heart. It’s a travel series of sorts which may include hotels, historic places, restaurants, activities and anything else deemed travel-worthy.
Last weekend, I spent a few days in Santa Monica with Universal Pictures where I participated in a press junket for the soon-to-be released film Big Miracle. The family-friendly film gleans inspiration from the true story of a global rescue adventure to save three gray whales trapped in Alaska. The story captured the hearts of men, women, and children all over and united the world while raising awareness about the environmental impact mankind is imposing on Earth. In the coming days, I’ll be sharing exclusive interviews and my review of the film. But today, I want to take you inside for a glimpse of the luxurious, beachfront Casa Del Mar Hotel.
The Casa Del Mar is one of The Leading Hotels in the World and for good reason. Visually, the hotel is stunning, both inside and out, and offers pristine views of the Pacific Ocean and Santa Monica pier. On a clear day, you might be able to see Malibu to the north, Palos Verdes to the south, and Catalina Island off in the distance to the west.
Despite it’s age (the hotel was built in 1926), the Casa Del Mar is impeccably maintained. Walking into the room, I felt like I was in a cozy, chic oceanfront bed and breakfast, as opposed to a mid-sized hotel with over 100 rooms. The rooms were recently renovated and feature warm, soothing colors and fabrics, a super-comfy four-poster bed, and the most inviting Hydrothermal massage tubs I’ve ever seen! And if it just so happens that you’re visiting the hotel for business, you’ll have the latest technology at your fingertips including a 42-inch plasma TV, DVD, and CD player, a flat screen TV in the bathroom, wireless and T1 internet access, and an iPod docking station. If you happen to be staying in one of their suites, you’ll have an in-room iPad…and access to their Mercedes-Benz S550 house car!
During my two-night stay, I had a taste of the hotel’s warm hospitality. Their in-room dining service was prompt, the valet attendants were personable and attentive, and I generally felt that the staff worked hard to ensure my stay was comfortable.
The hotel is ideally situated within walking distance of the beach, Santa Monica pier, and the city, which gives guests easy access to a host of beach activities and premier shopping. You can also opt to simply relax in the hotel at the spa, lounge by the pool, or enjoy one of their beach activities which include surf lessons, yoga on the sand and oceanfront bike rides.
