Somewhere during my teen years, our smallish family of three made it a tradition to see a movie on Christmas Day. We’d wake up early, grab breakfast (out, of course) and head to the theater for that film…that much anticipated holiday film of the season. This year, I expect War Horse to be that film.
Unlike most red carpet premieres, traditionally held in Los Angeles, War Horse made it’s world debut at Lincoln Center in New York City over the weekend. The venue is the world’s leading performing arts center, and with it’s expansive seating capacity, rich history, and status as the official theater for the Broadway production, it was ideally suited for the world premiere of Steven Spielberg’s latest film. Before the film began, Steven Spielberg made a brief appearance to introduce the cast and say a few brief words about his love for the book and the story which compelled him to adapt it for the screen.
War Horse depicts the story of Albert, a young man and soldier who tames and trains a horse named Joey. When the two are separated in war-torn England, what ensues is an incredible journey of bravery, loyalty, and hope. The film is set in rural England and Europe during World War 1 and follows Joey and Albert as they endure the war. War Horse originated as a book which was then adapted for the stage. Stay tuned for my official review of this epic film and a recap of our roundtable with actress Emily Watson, who plays Albert’s mother in the film.
In addition to attending the red carpet premiere, we had the privilege of seeing Mary Poppins: The Musical live at The New Amsterdam Theatre on Broadway, touring the theater, screening Tangled Ever After and Beauty and the Beast in 3D, and interviewing Steve Fickinger, who serves as the Vice President of Creative Development and Licensing, about his work with Mary Poppins and Newsies on Broadway (which is slated to open in March of 2012). Somewhere in the midst of all that we had a free day in New York City, so I did what any LA gal would do…I walked, shopped, ate, and took in as much of the city as I could. I can’t wait to share more about our weekend.
To celebrate the opening of War Horse, you can enter to win your own journey home for the holidays (which includes 2 roundtrip airfare tickets and a $50o Visa Gift Card). I still think you win for doing the most “New York” things on our free day. I want to go back and see the Rockettes too!
