Walmart’s Virtual Closet Creator…Back-to-School Wardrobe Shopping On a Budget

Posted by Caryn Bailey 11 Comments

Forty Two.  That is the number of fun-in-the sun days we have until my son starts his very first day of school.  Surprisingly, I don’t feel a lot of stress about him starting school. Perhaps that will change as we get closer to the date.  In the midst of park days, play dates and lazy days at the pool, I’m making lists and organizing my calendar with dates to prepare for the brand new school year.

Part of my planning includes my son’s back-to-school wardrobe.  While I’m not entirely sure what he can and can’t wear, I’ve been using Walmart’s Back to School Closet Creator to help me create virtual outfits that I can then purchase online or at my local Walmart.  The tool just launched this week and offers an easy way for families to plan their back-to-school shopping while taking budget into consideration.

So how does it work?

The very first thing I did was Browse Other Closets on the site (Back To School Closet for Less) to get a bit of inspiration and a feel for how the site works. One of the things I like about this particular section is the ability to search for closets using specific criteria (brands, colors, gender, age, budget).

Next, I began creating my closet. The tool allows you the option of selecting a gender, age, name, and budget for your closet. Remember that the closet is public so take that into consideration when naming your closet.

Once you’ve created your closet, you can begin adding items. I really like that I can sort by type of clothing, brand name or colors and you’ll find a ton of well-known, iconic brands like Fruit of the Loom, Danskin, L.E.I and Wrangler.  The only thing I would like is the ability to choose specific colors/sizes when adding items.  Through the experience, I found that once you click on purchase, another window will pop up that will allow you the option of making those selections before purchasing items.

You can also browse the sets, however, I prefer to create my own outfits, which is exactly what I did once I added items. There are two options at this point: Create your own outfit or have the site show you suggestions.

Once you’ve created your closet, save it.  You then have the option of sharing it with your networks, if you desire. Check out fellow Walmart Mom Lynnae‘s closet!

You can create closets for all of your children using this tool. Once you’ve created your closets, print out the list and bring it to your local Walmart to guide your shopping or shop online from the convenience of your home.

Overall, I found the tool to be easy to use and helpful in planning outfits for my son.  I really like the ability to browse closets moms have created, particularly because I can get very specific about sorting the closets by gender and age.  I’m still exploring the budget component, but as we get closer to back-to-school, I’ll be using that component to help me stay within the amount I’ve allotted for his wardrobe.

Disclosure:  I participate in the Walmart Moms program and am compensated for my time and honest opinions.

That is so cool! My son would have a blast with this. He loves doing these kinds of games on the iPad and I kid you not, he will spend a good hour just choosing outfits. I can have him go online, choose what he likes and then actually buy it. Great idea!
