Much of what I know about my uncle’s service to our country has been told through stories around the dinner table or photos displayed on mantles or albums. When I think too intently about what the men and women of our country have sacrificed for our freedoms, I get extremely emotional. I can’t be away from my kids for more than a night or two, so I can only imagine how difficult it must be to spend months or even years away serving our country. These men and women are so emphatic about protecting the freedoms we have been blessed with that they are willing to sacrifice (and have sacrificed) their own time with their families, their comforts, and even their lives for us. When those who do return home have completed their service, the challenges can be overwhelming. Re-acclimating to the simple day-to-day tasks of living and working can be daunting which is why I value Walmart’s longstanding Veteran’s Commitment.
There are so many reasons to hire Veterans beyond honoring their service to our country. Veterans possess a wealth of skills as leaders and team players as this is required while on the battlefield. Their training is traditionally intensive and regimented which means these men and women are disciplined and highly skilled in a number of disciplines. Walmart recognizes how valuable these men and women are and to date, has helped employ over 67,000 veterans and promoted over 5,000 veterans. Walmart has also guaranteed to offer a job to any honorably discharged veteran within the first 12 months of separation from service. I can’t imagine a better way to honor the men and women who have fought for our freedoms than by helping them make this often difficult transition back to their home and family life.
But beyond providing jobs, Walmart and the Walmart foundation have pledged an additional $20 million through 2019 to support both employment and transition programs to help veterans through this time (this is on top of the $20 million already pledged!). You can read more about Walmart’s renewed Veteran’s Commitment here.
As we remember the men and women who have served our country, I encourage you to visit Walmart.com/WallofHonor to share photos, videos or stories of honor and remembrance. You can also share these accolades on Facebook, Twitter, and Instgram using the hashtag #WallofHonor.
