Walmart Commits To Increasing US-Made Products and Supporting American Jobs

Over the course of this blog, I’ve shared my passion for reducing our carbon footprint…those steps we’ve taken to ensure that the items we consume and use in our home are not only safe for our family, but for the environment. Our journey is one that is fluid and changes as I learn more about where and how the products I purchase are being made. Recently I’ve become more attune to that little sticker that says “made in _____” and strive to support those products manufactured in the US.

American Jobs

Did You Know?

At present, two-thirds of the products you see in Walmart stores are made, sourced or grown in America. But the company wants to do more.

In a company as large as Walmart, it might seem like an impossible feat to find American-made products. But recently it was announced that Walmart will invest $250 billion in products that support American jobs over the next 10 years in response to requests from its consumers. The resulting benefit is two-fold: 1. Create more American jobs and thereby rebuild local and national economies 2. Bring more American-made products to consumers.

Walmart’s Commitment:

In order to create American jobs that will increase the number of US-made products in-stores, Walmart will work with its suppliers to:

  • Increase the purchase of U.S. manufactured goods in categories such as sporting goods, apparel basics, storage products, games, and paper products
  • Source “new to Walmart” U.S. manufactured goods including textiles, furniture, pet supplies, outdoor products, and high-end appliances
  • Work with suppliers to re-shore their manufacturing of goods to the US in the areas of textiles, household goods, and toys

Why Does It Matter?

As mentioned above, increasing the number of American-made products will help support our economy on a local and national level by creating jobs. As far as the items themselves, it is much easier to determine how these products are made and what they contain when they are sourced here in the US.  Through Walmart’s Made By Initiative, you’ll find products on store shelves that are responsibly sourced and manufactured which is yet one more step that supports the company’s sustainability efforts.

What Types of US-Made Products are Currently Being Sold at Walmart?

Right now, there are over 1,000 products that support American jobs on Walmart.com’s website. Home goods, household essentials, toys, crafts, and jewelry are just some of the categories where you’ll find these products.  I’m excited to see how Walmart’s inventory of US-made products expands over the next ten years.
