Kids Inspire Change With Unilever’s Project Sunlight

{While this post is part of a sponsored campaign by Unilever Project Sunlight, all opinions and experiences expressed are entirely my own}

You’re never too young to make a difference

My son came home earlier this Spring brimming with excitement over the things he’d learned at school about “going green.” It was Earth Month, which meant that their school activities and assignments focused on the importance of turning off lights, which items could be recycled, and how to grow your own garden. Even at 6, my son has a basic understanding of conservation and how our actions are affecting the planet, and despite his age, he is still capable of making a difference.  I was well into adulthood when I first started learning about the state of our environment and what I could personally do to make a difference…How much more can my children do having this awareness and knowledge so early in life?

It seems like more and more, films, TV shows, the news, and other outlets are showcasing stories of children making significant differences in all aspects of life. My son and I just screened a film with a timely message about how a child so small can do such great things.  And that is what Unilever Project Sunlight is all about…kids making a difference around the world to tackle environmental and social issues.

Last Fall, Unilever launched the project, which aims to “motivate people to live sustainably by inspiring them to create a brighter future for children.”  The actions I take right now will have an affect on the world my children will live in and that is my own personal motivation for being mindful of my footprint. As part of this long-term initiative, Unilever created the short film “The Way Kids See It” to highlight the good kids can do AND the simple but far-reaching message that even small actions can have exert great change. The video is incredibly inspirational and a powerful glimpse at the great things children who seem so small can do.

To inspire families to live more sustainably, Unilever Project Sunlight created Summer Sunlight Activities, a series of simple projects that prove anyone can make a difference right in their homes.  In fact, the change begins with you!  Because we as a family are so passionate about healthy eating, we’ve decided to participate in the activity titled “Be Your Own Farmer’s Market.”  We have attempted to grow a variety of fruits and vegetables in our backyard, and thanks to Unilever, we’ll be planting some herbs and vegetables in recycled jars to continue inspiring us towards healthy eating.  Will you join us?  You can view all of the activities by visiting Project Sunlight.
