To travel is to live – Hans Christian Andersen
The very first time I stepped foot onto a plane I found myself surrounded by the lights and sounds of the city that never sleeps. My time in New York broadened my perspective on culture and food and compelled me to want to explore as much of the world as possible. Perhaps that sense of wanderlust is why I cannot spend a day at the Disneyland Resort without riding Soarin’ Around the World. Originally conceived as Soarin’ Over California, Disney California Adventure Park’s latest experience now transports guests to some of the most beautiful places in the world.
Seeing the World from a Different View with Soarin’ Around the World
Soarin’ Around the World recently debuted at Disney California Adventure Park, shortly after its world debut at Shanghai Disney Resort. This flight motion simulator attraction now takes you to the Matterhorn in Switzerland, Isfjord (Greenland), Sydney Harbour (Australia), Neuschwanstein Castle (Germany), Kilimanjaro National Park (Tanzania), The Great Wall (China), The Great Pyramids (Egypt), Taj Mahal (India), West and East Mitten Buttes (Utah), Lau Islands (Fiji), Iguazu Falls (Argentina), Eiffel Tower (France), and Disneyland (California). As the title implies, you feel weightless, as if you’re flying over some of the most monumental places on Earth. The ride is also unique in that it engages your senses so that you feel the wind as you “hang-glide” across continents , smell fresh roses in India, and hear the splash of a whale leaping into the Arctic Ocean.
The technology employed by the ride is fascinating, as is the story that surrounds its inception. To celebrate the debut of the attraction at Disney California Adventure Park, here are 7 things you didn’t know about Soarin Around the World.
- Soarin’ Around the World uses a 4K film presentation on an 80 foot concave, 180-degree OMNIMAX laser projection screen to simulate a hang-gliding flight across the globe.
- Soarin’ Around the World uses high-definition, laser-projected footage and innovative motion-based ride technology developed by Walt Disney Imagineering.
- The ride originated at Disney California Adventure park and was duplicated at Epcot in Walt Disney World 2005. Additionally, guests can experience Soaring Over the Horizon at Shanghai Disneyland Park now and at Tokyo DisneySea in 2019.
- Soarin’ Around the World features a brand new score composed by Bruce Broughton and based on the original by composer Jerry Goldsmith. The score was performed by the London Studio Orchestra.
- The process of filming the locations featured in Soarin’ Around the World took just over one year and the team used both helicopters and drones to capture footage.
- Soarin’ Around the World takes you on a high-flying adventure to 13 must-see destinations. Interestingly enough The Colosseum in Italy, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Stonehenge in England, Big Ben in England and Russia’s Red Square were all considerations when choosing the attraction’s final destinations.
- Speaking of locations, several of the destinations featured in Soarin’ Around the World have iconic Disney ties including the Matterhorn, Sleeping Beauty’s Castle, Monument Valley (Cars), Sydney Harbour (Finding Nemo), Eiffel Tower (Ratatouille), and the South Pacific (Moana).
