My love for musical theater hails back to one of the most iconic musicals of all-time…The Sound of Music. This beautiful, classic story features music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, a dynamic writing team that shaped American musical theatre.
Set in Austria on the eve of Anschluss, the musical follows the story of Maria, a nun who takes a job as a governess to the von Trapp family. During her time with the children, she teaches them about music, love, and embracing their unique individual personalities.
Captain von Trapp, a widow, has hardened his heart towards life and subsequently his children, but Maria’s kind yet unrelenting personality softens him. Through her time as governess, she helps him re-establish a relationship with his children and the two fall in love. At the end of the story, Captain von Trapp is ordered to accept a consignment in the German navy, however his opposition to the Nazis compels him to flee his country with Maria and his children.
Earlier this week, the Segerstrom Center for the Arts debuted a brand new production of The Sound of Music, directed by Tony Award winner Jack O’Brien. While the production varies from the original, the music stays true to Rodgers and Hammerstein. Some of the acts have been re-imagined along with placement of songs throughout the production. But the heart of The Sound of Music is retained with a vibrant cast, an immersive set, and beautiful period costumes.
Tickets for The Sound of Music at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts start at just $29 and can be purchased online, at the box office or via phone at 714.755.0236. Showtimes are Tuesday – Friday at 7:30 p.m., Saturday at 2 and 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 1 and 6:30 p.m. Don’t miss The Sound of Music, now performing live through July 31st, 2016.
