You don’t have to be good at starting over, you just have to be good at letting go – The Single Moms Club
I walked into my parents’ house that cool Fall afternoon, and almost immediately, my mother sensed the weight of sleepless nights, breastfeeding struggles, and self-neglect I was carrying. Blessed is the only word to describe the tremendous amount of support I’ve received from my parents, my in-laws and a few close girlfriends. Parenting is not for the weak…it is humbling yet deeply rewarding. It’s one of the most important things I’ll do in my life and my ability to do it well will determine the rest of their life. Can you imagine going at it alone?
On March 14th, Lionsgate will release The Single Moms Club, a poignant film about the journey of five single mothers who, despite their differences, form a support group. With their children on the brink of school expulsion, these moms must organize the school’s fundraiser and school dance as ordered by the Principal. What ensues is a story about what it takes to raise a child when you’re going at it alone and the value of having a strong support system. The inspiration and sisterhood they find teaches them that they can in fact face all of the obstacles that come with being a single mother.
Admittedly, the single moms I know, I don’t know well. So many times I’m simply trying to keep it together myself, that I don’t even think about the added challenges a single mother has to overcome. My hope is that my sensitivity to single mothers will be heightened and that I would in some way be an encouragement or source of support/comfort for those in my life.
I’m planning to see the film this week before interviewing some of the talent and I’m excited about hearing from the five stars of the film (Nia Long, Cocoa Brown, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Amy Smart, Zulay Henao) about the joys, the challenges, the lessons they learned and what they hope audiences will take away from the film.
The Single Moms Club debuts in theaters March 14th, 2014.
