The Importance of a Great Start

Posted by Caryn Bailey 5 Comments

From great starts come great things – Kellogg’s

Too often in life, I’m soley focused on the end result.  For instance, one of my recurring goals is to lose weight. When I think about how much weight I have to lose…that number that seems so far out of reach…I get discouraged.  Sometimes that discouragement prevents me from taking action.  But if I would simply start the process…exercise 20 minutes 3 times a week, start a nutrition diary to monitor the calories I’m consuming, etc. etc….I would be that much closer to the finish line.

That is why I love Kellogg’s philosophy on celebrating starts, perfectly timed for the London 2012 Olympic Games.  As an official sponsor of the United States Olympic Committee, the brand is showcasing and celebrating the start stories of eight Team Kellogg’s athletes.

During my time at the US Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California, I participated in a one-on-one interview with Rita Wieber, mom to gymnast and Olympic hopeful Jordyn Wieber.  We talked about her “start,” what it’s like to raise a champion, and how she ensures Jordyn maintains balance when it comes to her social, academic, and professional activities.

From watching some of the team’s start stories, including Jordyn’s, I was inspired by their drive, commitment, maturity and determination. In the coming weeks, I’ll share that exclusive interview with you as well as the some photos from the professional shoot I participated in!

Part of each US Olympians journey includes training at one of three US Olympic Training Centers located across the country.  Some of the athletes live on campus for a period of time, while others visit at specific times with their team for training camps, coaching, etc. Specifically, athletes are chosen to train at the Chula Vista Olympic Training Center by their respective sport Federation or National Governing Body and the center provides support to these athletes with housing, dining, training facilities, recreational activities, professional development programs and more.

The center is open to the public Monday through Saturday, and guided tours are available Saturdays and at other times if a volunteer tour guide is available. During our visit, we received a lively and informative tour from Kara Patterson, who currently holds the American record in the javelin throw.  You can see some of the photos I snapped on my phone here.

Our day with Kellogg’s was a diverse mix of brand immersion and information about both the upcoming 2012 Olympic Games and how the USOC helps athletes realize their full potential.  Shortly, I’ll be sharing more about the brand immersion part of the trip including some of Kellogg’s latest initiatives.

If you happen to be in San Diego, I highly recommend planning a visit to the USOC.  It’s one of those off-the-beaten path types of activities but definitely interesting and well worth a visit.

The start is where each person realizes his or her potential. I was incredibly motivated by this concept as it’s such a unique perspective.  I can’t wait to share more on my involvement as one of Kelloggs’ Champions of Great Starts! For more information, just visit their Facebook page.

Disclosure: This is part of a compensated campaign with Kellogg’s.  All opinions remain my own.
