I used to date a guy who lavished me with gifts. After I had sung Can’t Buy Me Love for the last time, I made a vow not to succumb to the retail wiles of tall, dark, and handsome men. Ha! What woman doesn’t want the affections of the man she loves displayed in the form of a Hallmark card and a box of Sees Candy?
I met my husband a few years later and his southern charm and hospitality won me over. Who needs roses and candy when I have love and respect? I told my mom I was going to marry him. Now I’m no Glenn Close but a year and a half later we were going to the chapel!
I have to admit that while marriage has allowed both of us to become slightly complacent in our gift-giving, Jason can still be quite romantic and adorable when he puts his mind to it. One day I’ll share the fairy tale of how he proposed.
Birthdays are very important in the Rivera household (that’s me!). The day-of is crucial for candle-blowing and song-singing. One particular birthday, Jason surprised me with an overnight trip all the way to Santa Monica! For those of you who don’t know Los Angeles, that is about a 30-45 minute drive at most from where we lived. What rocked about the trip was that we stayed right on the water at the fancy, schmancy Loews hotel. Wait…it gets better!
After checking in, he told me that we were going to the fancy, schmancy Locanda del Lago for dinner! Jason forgot to mention that one tiny detail when I packed that morning! Of course I had nothing to wear. Then he gave me the new that every woman wants to hear…I was to buy a dress and shoes for dinner that night as part of my birthday extravaganza! How cool was that! I have had a lot of great birthdays but that one pretty much put the icing on my cake (hehe).
Mother’s Day is coming up people…ahem…hubbie! I know our little munchkin consumes all of our thoughts and energy but I’m hoping for something meaningful for MY FIRST MOTHER’S DAY! I already signed him up for getinherhead.com, a new site that will help my husband and yours get it right…gift-giving that is…every time, all the time. This free service provides a running gift list and email reminders for important dates that are fast-approaching.
Other mothers are talking…Head on over to The Parent Bloggers Network this weekend for some hi-larious stories of gifts gone wrong…and a few that got it right.
