Last year, LAIKA’s 3D stop motion animated film about a boy raised underground by a community of quirky, mischievous, kindly trash-collecting creatures wowed audiences with it’s stunning and intricately detailed visuals. Loosely based on Alan Snow’s fantasy/adventure novel Here Be Monsters, the film details the story of the Boxtrolls, a misunderstood breed believed to be a danger to humans, particularly children. In reality, the Boxtrolls are highly resourceful creatures who have been raising the main protagonist Eggs, a human boy found by the trolls as a baby. When Eggs learns that his “family” are the target of villain Archibald Snatcher’s extermination plan, he partners with the mayor’s daughter Winnie to save them.
You might remember that I had the privilege of traveling to LAIKA Studios in Portland, Oregon last year for a detailed glimpse into the world of stop-motion animation. Even before seeing the completed work, I knew that the film would impress audiences visually. The Boxtrolls has been nominated for 13 Annie Awards including Best Animated Film by the International Animated Film Society. If you’ve yet to see the film, you’ll be happy to learn that it will be available on Blu-ray and DVD January 20th, 2015.
