The first time I gazed into his stark, brown eyes, mirror images of mine, I was hooked. Love at first sight if you may. Every day of my 38 week-long pregnancy I prayed for my son. It was a difficult pregnancy wrought with fear and uncertainty. Some days I had to pinch myself into believing that I would most certainly be a mother. In retrospect, I should have spent every single day in that bed devoted to learning about the “how to’s” of parenting rather than succumbing to societal pressures to find the latests “whats” on the market.
Mother. Mom, mum, mama, mommy…the nomenclature is endless and familiar. But what is a mother? My only frame of reference on how to parent a child was my own mother. Like a rite of passage, motherhood is both instinctual and learned. It is the day-to-day experiences with my son that teach me how to be a better mother.
As I watch my son grow and change I can’t help but reflect on my own childhood. My mother is still to this day my best friend. I am who I am today because of my mother.
Because of her love for me, I know how to love my husband and son.
Because of her caring, tender nature, I am able to care and empathize as a nurse.
Because of her discipline, I have structure and organization in my life.
Because of her belief in me, I believe in myself.
Because of her sacrifices, I am able to selflessly sacrifice my time, my freedom, and myself to my husband and son.
Because of her wisdom, I am able to be discerning.
Because of her godly example as a wife and a mother, I know how to be a Proverbs 31 woman.
Because of her witness, I know Christ as my Lord and Savior.
Because of her humility, I am humbled.
It is an honor to celebrate my very first Mother’s Day with my mother who still inspires and encourages me everyday to do the impossible.
