It’s 11:00 in LA, and the plush angry birds are already flying, launched from the larger than life slingshot set up for the occasion. We’re at the World Premiere of The Angry Birds Movie and the mood is anything but angry.
The much anticipated film, slated to open in theaters on May 20th, 2016, explores the backstory of the birds featured in Rovio Entertainment’s popular game Angry Birds. Set on “bird island,” we finally glean some insight as to why these flightless birds are so angry. In one hilariously noteworthy scene, the three “angry birds” end up in a confessional of sorts during anger management where we find out how each one earned their “angry” status.
If you’re familiar with the video game, you’ll begin to make the connection. Birds are launched via slingshot in an attempt to destroy the pigs who’ve stolen their eggs, and this becomes realized in CG on-screen, brought to life by the voice talents of Jason Sudeikis (Red), Josh Gad (Chuck), and Danny McBride (Bomb). When the infamous green pigs mysteriously and suspiciously show up on the island, Red, Chuck and Bomb set out to uncover what they are up to.
The weaving of game elements into the story is perhaps most remarkable during the final battle between the Angry Birds and the Pigs. Each bird is afforded their moment to shine as they are hurled via slingshot in an attempt to destroy the green pigs’ fortresses. Visually engaging, the film brings the popular game to life with rich visuals, a comedically on-point voice cast, and a believable story about anger as a valid emotional response to injustice.
All of the birds…ahem…voice actors flew in for the premiere of The Angry Birds Movie including Bill Hader, Josh Gad, Tony Hale, Jason Sudeikis, Maya Rudolph, Blake Shelton (who wrote a song for the film) and girlfriend Gwen Stefani.
Prior to the film’s premiere, we graced the red carpet along with the likes of these characters.
Reptacular Animals was also on-hand showing off their beautiful birds and piglets. How’s that for bringing the film to life?

After the premiere, space in front of the Regency Theater was transformed into a carnival complete with food trucks, games, a photo booth and more.
