It seems like right after the New Year, there was a shift. Rather than seeing pretty, mouth-watering photos of delectable desserts, my Facebook stream was filled with motivational quotes, healthy dishes, and fitness resolutions. It’s the new year, and what better time than now to change habits, try something new, get organized, get fit, and get healthy?
While I haven’t made specific resolutions, I’m committed to eating healthy and upping my exercise regiment, particularly since I allowed the holidays to give me a free pass to indulge. One of the easiest and most enjoyable ways for me to get my heart pumping is to go for a run. We finally live in a neighborhood with scenic running routes, so as it warms up, I’ll be opting for those over my local gym’s treadmill to continue my fitness goals.
As you can imagine, running can be quite lonely if done solo. With some good music going, it’s a wonderful time to reflect and focus on me (a rarity).
When I was approached to review a walkman, I giggled, then immediately thought back to my tween days where you’d never find me without a book in hand and headphones over my ears. I honestly thought that those days were gone (am I dating myself?). Sony recently introduced their new W Series line of Walkmans, and before you imagine a trip back to the 80’s, these are not the walkmans of yesteryear. This MP3 player/headphone set is water-resistant, wearable, and wire-free.
Designed for anyone looking to workout in some capacity, this wearable walkman features 2GB of internal memory and a battery that provides up to 8 hours of uninterrupted music. Additionally, the specific model received was inspired by Olympic silver medalist and New York City Marathon winner Meb Keflezighi and features pre-loaded audio tips by the athlete and a runner’s booklet with tips on running, nutrition, stretching, strategy, and a list of his favorite motivational running songs.
Setting up the walkman was relatively easy and simply included downloading the software, then adding music (we did this from iTunes for Windows). Some things to note include it’s incompatibility with Mac OS and it’s preference for certain files on iTunes (in other words, it didn’t like the format of some of my downloaded music and thus would not accept it). I have never used Windows Media for music, but that is an option for those who don’t use iTunes.
Apart from those small inconveniences, I really like Sony’s new W Series Walkman MP3 Player. I often find that when I’m running, my earbuds come out of my ear and inevitably, my wires get tangled (which of course, interrupts my workout). Additionally, I’ve always found that wearing an MP3 player on my workout clothing is uncomfortable and inconvenient, since I’m constantly worrying about whether or not it’s going to fall off. Since this set rests on the back of your head and the MP3 player is contained inside, there are no wires or devices to be attached to your clothing.
Other noteworthy features include it’s quick charge battery that will provide 60 minutes of use with a 3 minute charge and it’s water resistance (for those who sweat when they workout). The sound is superb and once you’ve figured out the controls, you can easily change songs or playlists with the tap of a button. And since we all differ in our preference for earbuds, this walkman comes with 3 different sizes.
Sony’s new W Series Walkman MP3 Player is available at Walmart and models start at just $59.99.
