Take a Breath of Fresh Air

Posted by Caryn Bailey Leave a Comment

Spring is here and so begins allergy season! I have suffered from allergies for as long as I can remember. Several years ago I saw an ENT every month and religiously took my daily antihistamine in hopes of thwarting a serious attack. Over the last two years I’ve been able to reduce the number of visits to the ENT and have managed to stop taking my daily antihistamine because of some lifestyle changes I made. My husband also suffers from seasonal allergies but by no means to the extent that I have suffered. I worry about my son who is genetically predispositioned towards allergies.

When I got pregnant with our son, I made a ton of changes. The food we buy, the cleaning products we use, and the cosmetics we wear are all ways we’ve tried to improve our health. I’ve also been reading some awesome books and doing some research on “greening” our way of living. I have always tried to seek haven in my home when I have an allergy exacerbation for fear of outdoor pollens making it worse. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, indoor air is four to five times more polluted than outdoor air so I was probably doing myself a disservice. One of the things we’ve started doing is leaving the doors and windows open during the day to let in some fresh air.

The prevalence of allergies and asthma is on the rise. Check out these statistics from the American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology.

  • Asthma and allergies strike 1 out of 4 Americans.
  • Approximately 20 million Americans have asthma.
  • Nine million U.S. children under 18 have been diagnosed with asthma.
  • More than four million children have had an asthma attack in the previous year.
  • More than 70% of people with asthma also suffer from allergies.
  • 10 million Americans suffer specifically from allergic asthma.
  • The prevalence of asthma increased 75% from 1980-1994.
  • Asthma rates in children under the age of five have increased more than 160% from 1980-1994.

While alarming, we must do something to protect our family. Air purifiers are all the rage but may not be as effective (as they only work in the room they’re situated in) as a home air filtration system. American Standard Heating & Air Conditioning’s AccuClean whole home air filtration system removes up to 99.98% of unwanted particles and allergens from the filtered air in your home. The system filters airborne allergens like mold, dust mites, pollen, pet hair and animal dander, before they have an opportunity to make it to your rugs, floors and upholstery. AccuClean also prevents odors by removing particles like cooking grease and smoke from the air. One of the best things about the system is it’s ability to remove more than 99% of the common flu, or influenza A virus, from the filtered air in your home.

AccuClean is easy to install and can be attached to your existing furnace or air handler, without renovating your home. Your entire home will reap the benefits. AccuClean is one hundred times more effective than standard one-inch filters and easy to clean by simply vacuuming or washing the reusable filter. If you’d like more information on AccuClean, visit their website. They also have tips on keeping your indoor air clean and healthy.
