I waited until the morning of our visit to the Aquarium of the Pacific to tell my kids what I had planned for the day. I love to surprise them, and now that the holidays are over, they weren’t anticipating animation lessons and penguin encounters on their day off from school.
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment just released Surf’s Up 2: Wavemania on DVD and Digital, and our day was spent celebrating the release through hands-on activities that tested our drawing skills and a Q&A with the Aquarium’s penguin expert that gave us insight into the behaviors of penguins and their fragility.
Surf’s Up 2 – Family Press Trip Fun!
Our press day started with a drawing lesson guided by Surf’s Up 2: Wavemania director Henry Yu. Yu makes his directorial debut with this film but prior to Surf’s Up 2, he served as a story artist on Sony Pictures Animation’s Popeye and Hotel Transylvania.
Yu showed us how to draw J.C. (John Cena), Paige (Paige, Wrestler), Chicken Joe (Jon Heder), and Lani Aliikai (Melissa Sturm).
His session reminded me how difficult it is to draw an animated character and how much talent animators are gifted with.
Since the film features a gang of Penguin surfers, it was fitting that we visit the June Keyes Penguin Habitat at the Aquarium.
The habitat is home to 20 Magellanic Penguins which were named after Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan and are considered a temperate species (as opposed to the species that call Antarctica their home). You can distinguish these penguins by the two black stripes on their chests (other species have one stripe).
Surf’s Up 2: Wavemania is the sequel to the computer-animated mockumentary film Surf’s Up. The film is a parody of popular surfing documentaries and follows surfer Cody Maverick, who is craving a new challenge. He convinces his big wave riding crew aka The Hang 5 to let him join them on their journey to the mysterious surf spot called The Trenches. According to legend, this is where they will find the biggest waves in the world. As the story progresses, Cody discovers that the life he left behind may be more heroic than what those death-defying waves have to offer.
