Super Greens Smoothie Inspired by The BFG

My son has an insatiable love for reading, and it isn’t uncommon for him to imagine what the characters might do at the close of the final chapter. Perhaps that is why we are drawn to film adaptations of classics like Roald Dahl’s The BFG. Now in theaters, audiences are immersed in the imaginative Giant Country, where a young British girl and a Snozzcumber-eating giant can speak of magic and mystery and we believe it.

BFG

The BFG is one of Dahl’s iconic stories and holds particular significance because it was dedicated to his daughter who died at a very young age. Unlike the carnivorous, human-eating inhabitants of Giant Country, the BFG enjoys Frobscottle (a carbonated soft drink where bubbles float downward as opposed to upward) and snozzcumber (a gruesome vegetable resembling a zucchini or cucumber). When Sophie’s presence in Giant Country becomes troublesome, the two friends depart for London to warn the queen of the precarious situation in hopes of permanently eliminating the giants.

Super Greens Smoothie Ingredients

Kids are naturally drawn to the characters and stories they grow up with and I often use them to inspire crafts, activities and even meals. In honor of the release of The BFG, I whipped up a delicious, healthy Super Green Smoothie. As vibrant as it looks, kids will absolutely love the delicate sweetness added by fresh, organic apples.

Here is my recipe for a Super Green Smoothie Inspired by The BFG:

Super Green Smoothie Inspired by The BFG
Ingredients
  • 1 cucumber peeled
  • 2 apples peeled and cored
  • 1/2 inch ginger
  • 1 handful of fresh spinach
  • 1 lemon peeled and seeded
Instructions
  1. Blend all ingredients until smooth
  2. Chill, if desired
  3. Serve with fresh, sliced cucumber

Smoothies are an excellent way to help kids (and adults!) get in the recommended number of servings for fruits and vegetables. They are easy to whip up on busy mornings, and if you add in a protein, can be a satiating meal replacement. Most of the time, you don’t have to measure the ingredients and it is very easy to swap out those fruits and vegetables you don’t enjoy for ones you do. Get creative and mix and match your favorites for a healthy snack.
