{Consideration provided by SeaWorld}
My kids’ career aspirations fluctuate, sometimes on an hourly basis. From paleontologist to President of the United States, each of my children have ambitious dreams of what they want to do for the rest of their life. My son is particularly science-oriented, and our last visit to SeaWorld San Diego, he spent much of our tour speaking with the trainers who rescue and rehabilitate the sea life present at the park.
We recently had the unique opportunity of experiencing some of SeaWorld’s behind-the-scenes happenings during our visit. Along with getting an inside look at their rescue and rehabilitation practices, we walked through their Animal Care Center and experienced first-hand how animals are treated at the hospital by in-house veterinarians. SeaWorld candidly answered our questions about the animals and I walked away with a wealth of information detailing why the park is such a necessity for sea life.
During our visit to SeaWorld, we were given a first look at a host of new rides, animal encounters and experiences slated to debut this summer. Families will experience the wonders of the ocean through aquariums, rides and technology at Ocean Explorer. The 11 remaining Orcas at SeaWorld will now be accessible throughout the day to guests as they learn about their behaviors in a documentary-style experience at Orca Encounter. Lastly, on June 17th, SeaWorld will debut a nighttime experience unlike any in the US. Electric Ocean will transform the park to mirror the deep bioluminescent ocean in a spectacular that will offer families a new park after dark.
As you prepare for your visit, here are 3 Things You Must See at SeaWorld San Diego this Summer:
- Ocean Explorer: Located near Sesame Street Bay of Play, Ocean Explorer features live animal experiences, advanced digital interfaces and family-centric rides to immerse guests in an undersea world. The hallmark ride at Ocean Explorer is Submarine Quest, which uses “smart play” technology to enable guests to guide their mission of oceanic exploration. Tentacle Twirl will swing guests high as they are suspended in chairs from the tentacles of a giant jelly. Aqua Scout, OctaRock and Sea Dragon Drop all mirror Ocean Explorer’s deep-sea discovery theme. After getting your thrill on, come face-to-face with giant Pacific octopuses, Japanese spider crabs, and California moray eels.
- Orca Encounter: Earlier this year, SeaWorld announced the end of its killer whale breeding program. Additionally, the park recently launched a brand new way to experience the natural behaviors of killer whales. This documentary-style experience features a three-story infinity screen and a natural rugged coastline setting with towering pines and majestic waterfalls. This live orca presentation will be enhanced by videos portraying killer whales natural behaviors in the wild. SeaWorld’s commitment to educational and natural orca presentation will be realized when guests observe the remaining 11 whales exhibiting natural breaching behavior and then seeing it on-screen. This is a unique opportunity for families to experience the world of the killer whale, something most people have never seen. SeaWorld hopes to inspire guests to appreciate and take action to protect these magnificent animals.
- Electric Ocean: Debuting June 17th, 2017, Electric Ocean will transform the park into a sea of glowing color and energy. drawing inspiration from the phenomenon of ocean bioluminescence, the park will come alive with nighttime shows and performances. Sea characters will entice guests to join them in a family-friendly dance party as they are immersed in lasers, lights, music and special effects. Families can experience their favorite rides and attractions (Atlantis, Manta) lit by the ocean glow and those with special RFID lanyards and bubble wands will be able to change the colors swirling around them for a unique, personalized experience. Additionally, guests will be intrigued by the bioluminescent microscopic algae called dinoflagellates at the Aquaria aquarium. During the day, these single-celled organisms absorb light via photosynthesis. At night, they display a bioluminescent glow. Additional shows include Cirque Electrique, a nighttime iteration of the daytime show Cirque de la Mer. The show’s aerial performers will don LED suits as they attempt their daring feats over Mission Bay. Lastly, guests can dance at Club Current and experience Illuminight, a new show featuring larger-than-life sea creatures, lasers and a cast of dancers, acrobats and musicians.
