Friends and family who live in other states find it amusing that I’m shivering the moment it drops below 70 degrees. Winters in California are generally mild and the most we really need as far as outerwear is a light jacket. The mittens, boots, and scarves primarily serve as fashion pieces and accents unless we’re traveling to a place much colder than where we live. Because the outerwear we purchase is generally not worn much and my kids usually outgrow these items every single year, affordability is my number one priority when shopping.
Given our temperate weather, I was pleasantly surprised at the diverse variety of jackets and accessories currently in stock at my local Walmart. We travel some during the winter months around the holidays, so I was specifically looking for lightweight coats that would still keep the kids warm. The first item I picked out for my son was the Xpedition Boys’ Mixed Media Jacket in Blue Thrill which is water-repellent, wind resistant and surprisingly warm for how lightweight it is. My son still isn’t overly concerned with fashion but he really liked the look and feel of this jacket, particularly because he isn’t accustomed to wearing clothing that is bulky or heavy. My son loves the soft cozy interior and he’s able to zip it himself which makes it easy for taking on and off. We actually had an opportunity to test out the jacket’s water-repellant properties with the first real rain of the season and we were pleased that he managed to stay dry despite his puddle splashing. We opted for one size up from what my son is currently wearing to try to get an extra season of wear out of the jacket. The jacket currently comes in 2 colors and is priced at $13.97 which is incredible!
While I wasn’t able to find the exact equivalent for my daughter, we both really liked Faded Glory’s Bubble Jacket which is available in 11 different colors/prints. She picked out Black Soot which features fluorescent pink accents. The jacket itself is incredibly warm, and while the manufacturer does not specifically state that it is waterproof, still managed to keep my daughter dry in the rain. Along with featuring a zip-front closure, a fleece-lined interior, and 2 side pockets (for mittens!), it also includes a hood which is great for younger kids who maybe can’t hold their own umbrella. This jacket currently retails for $12.50 and would make a wonderful lightweight jacket for the winter.
Since my kids don’t typically wear hats and gloves, I decided to be frugal and choose and purchase Faded Glory’s 2 Piece Hat and Glove Set for my son and the Faded Glory’s 3 Piece Tech Gloves and Hat Set for my daughter. These accessory pieces are stylish, warm, and most importantly affordable at just $3.94 for each set. I like that the kids can interchange the colors as they desire and it’s nice to have an extra set of gloves in the event that one or both of them get lost. These would also make awesome Christmas Stocking Stuffers!
