The first day of Spring is less than one week away and our warm Southern California temperatures are already dictating a change in wardrobe. I don’t really own official winter clothing, rather, I have several long-sleeved tees and sweaters I layer on top of my traditional tees and tanks. When I’m not going out for a client meeting, an event, or an evening out, I stick to jeans and short-sleeved tees or tanks for comfort. I simply dress my outfit up with accessories and a pair of cute shoes. As soon as we experience a change in season, my tendency is to want to go out and purchase new clothes. This week, I caught myself and decided that planning was better than impulsivity and it paid off when I picked up 5 new tops (2 Polos and 3 Tanks) for my husband and I for under $35 at my local Walmart. With Spring on the horizon, Walmart is showcasing their Faded Glory Ribbed Cotton Tanks for Women ($3.94) and George Short Sleeve Polos for Men ($9,97). The prices are unbeatable…but how do they look? And more importantly, are they comfortable, durable, and designed to last? The hubby and I dish on the latest fashion offerings from Walmart and show you how to spruce up your spring wardrobe on a budget.
Whether you live in a part of the country that sees a lot of sunshine, or you’re still digging yourself out of the snow, it’s always smart to take inventory of your closet before venturing out on a shopping mission to determine what wardrobe pieces you can use for the coming season. Have those items in mind (or even take a few photos on your smart phone) when you go into the store so you can create several outfits without spending a lot of money. Be sure to think “outside the box” when planning your outfits. For example, tank tops, which would traditionally be considered a more casual wardrobe staple, can be paired with a skirt for an evening out or a pair of slacks for a work meeting. Similarly, polos can be dressed up with a pair of slacks for an afternoon of golf or dressed down with a pair of jeans for a casual evening out with friends. Remember that accessories and shoes can change the entire motif of an outfit and are often less expensive than purchasing complete outfits.
After taking stock of my closet, I realized that I have an incredible affinity for black. Tanks, tees, pants, skirts, dresses…I own at least one or more of each in black which is why the very first tank I picked up was a black one. I can pair this tank with jeans, shorts, capris, khakis, skirts and even sundresses, which is how I created my first Spring Outfit. I have this gorgeous Pink Paisley Maxi Dress that I purchased online last year, but haven’t been able to wear because the cut in the front is too low and the back is too open. Pairing it with a black tank was the perfect solution and afforded me the opportunity to wear this dress for luncheons and special occasions. Pair it with heels or wedges and a bracelet to complete the outfit.
If you can believe it, I used this same black tank to create a work outfit with a pair of cream slacks I picked up from a local fashion retailer several years back. I honestly had not worn these slacks in years because I felt like they were “out of style.” But pairing them with my new black tank and a pair of black boots was the perfect opportunity to give these slacks new life.
I love being a bit adventurous when it comes to fashion, so I thought I’d take a risk and pick up a print tank to pair with my favorite capri jeans. This pink and and grey-striped tank actually ended up being my favorite of the 3 tanks, although admittedly I can probably only wear it with jeans or slacks.
Spring is all about color, so I picked up a third tank in vibrant turquoise. While I wasn’t sure how versatile this color would be, it ended up working well as a casual and a more formal staple piece. In this first outfit, I paired the tank with a pair of black slacks and a black cardigan to create an outfit I could see myself wearing at business meetings. I absolutely love how the color helps inject vibrance into the outfit.
One of my favorite wardrobe items is a black convertible dress that can actually be worn as a skirt. I paired the same turquoise tank with this “skirt” which would make a dynamic “evening-out-on-the-town” outfit. Slip on a pair of wedges or add your favorite necklace to personalize your look.
For $3.94, these Faded Glory Ribbed Cotton Tanks are a bargain! They are available in 27 colors and made from a comfy cotton/spandex blend which gives them a bit of give and stretch. Tip. If you’re in-between sizes, I recommend going with a size down because I found that they do stretch a bit with wear.
My husband rarely buys clothes for himself, so when Walmart asked if he wanted to check out the George Short Sleeve Polos for Men, I readily agreed. It’s not that he doesn’t enjoy shopping for himself…it’s that he simply doesn’t have time. As soon as I felt these polos, I was impressed with the quality of the fabric, which is comprised of a cotton blend. These polos, which are available in 30 different colors, are dressy enough to be worn for business meetings, yet comfortable and versatile enough to be paired with jeans for a casual Saturday afternoon with the kids. My husband likes the fact that the knit collar and cuffs lay flat (no ironing!) and that they are tagless. The fabric is lightweight making it ideal for Spring and Summer days and because the polos are treated with Scotchguard, stains are less likely to permanently sink in.
Here are some photos of my husband wearing each polo for a dressy and a casual look:
With just $35, you and your significant other can spruce up your spring wardrobe on a budget. Remember to utilize what you already have, use staple pieces to create multiple looks, and accessorize!
