Saturday morning with the Looney Tunes was the norm in my childhood home. My father always managed to maintain his sense of humor and youth, and Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck were some of his favorite cartoon characters. It feels like we watched every single episode and cinematic iteration that featured the Looney Tunes, including Space Jam. When the original film was released in 1996, it was a global box office success, becoming the highest-grossing basketball film of all time. The film was praised for its fusion of live-action and animation, along with a “semi-biographical” story of basketball legend Michael Jordan’s retirement from the NBA. Twenty-five years later, Warner Bros. studio revives the franchise with a new stand-alone sequel titled Space Jam: A New Legacy.

Space Jam: A New Legacy
Starring basketball champion LeBron James, Space Jam: A New Legacy fuses live-action, traditional hand-drawn animation, and 3D CGI effects in a fictionalized story which teams the global icon up with the Looney Tunes. Set in the Warner Bros. multiverse, the film follows James as he goes on an epic adventure with Bugs Bunny and the Looney Tunes to rescue his son.
Like many parents, James wants his sons to follow in his athletic footsteps, but his younger son Dom has his own dreams of becoming a video game developer. Despite James’ push to up his son’s basketball game, Dom spends his time working on a game he has created.
James brings Dome along with him on a studio visit to discuss a movie deal. And while James is uninterested in the proposal, Dom’s interest in Warner Bros.’ software is piqued, ultimately trapping the two of them in a digital space headed up by a rogue A.I. To escape, James and the Looney Tunes must battle A.I.’s digitized champions on the court.
Space Jam: A New Legacy introduces the beloved Looney Tunes characters to a new generation while reconnecting them with a familiar basketball sensation. The story, though predictable, encourages parents to support kids’ interests and allow them to be themselves, though the sentiment is kept light throughout the film. Action, comedy, and pop culture keep kids and families engaged in the film. And the Easter Eggs…oh how they abound! Space Jam: A New Legacy is now in theaters nationwide, and on HBOMax for a limited time.
