She is kind, beautiful, and has a heart of Gold. Sofia the First, Disney’s first little girl princess, is winning the hearts of children as she embarks on her adventures, sometimes clumsily, towards royalty. The show has become a favorite of my daughter’s, and as a parent, I enjoy the positive messages she conveys about what it really means to be a princess.
Last Fall, Disney Junior premiered Sofia the First: Once Upon a Princess, an animated television movie that introduced Sofia and her friends. After Sofia’s mother marries the king, the two of them move into the castle where Sofia must learn how to fit in with her new family, make new friends, and begin developing the personality characteristics that make one truly royal.
Just like the princesses you imagine, Sofia lives in a world filled with castles, wizards, and flying horses, yet she struggles with the same situations young children experience such as fitting in, mastering new skills, and working through friendships.
As a parent, I value the emphasis on the internal rather than the external characteristics that make one a princess. Although Sofia is adorable, it is her honestly, loyalty, compassion, and courage that I hope resonates with my daughter.
Fauna, Flora, and Merryweather, the fairies we all know and love from Sleeping Beauty, help Sofia along her royal journey as she learns to be a princess both inside and out. Additionally, Cinderella makes a special visit to offer Sofia some wise advise.
Sofia the First: Once Upon a Princess is now available on DVD and includes “A Princess In Training Activity Kit” which includes stickers and tiaras. The DVD also includes a Royal Sing-A-Long.

We actually haven’t seen this show before, but my daughter keeps seeing commercials and she’s very interested because she loves princesses.
