My son started Kindergarten this year, and one of the unexpected joys of our morning walks include the conversations we have about friends, toys, LEGOS, and snails (yes snails!). We live in an area that is seemingly overpopulated with snails, and at times, it literally feels like a maze trying to get to school without smooshing one of them. I digressed. During a recent walk amongst the snails, my son started talking about Turbo, one of DreamWorks Animation’s soon-to-be released films. We saw a preview for the film when The Croods opened in theaters last month, and from that moment, he was hooked.
The summer release follows the story of Turbo (voiced by Ryan Reynolds), an ordinary garden snail with a dream of becoming the fastest snail in the world. The story was inspired by Director David Soren’s six year old son, who had a fascination with race cars and the snails that inhabit his front yard. According to Soren, the snail is an underdog…”loaded with obstacles.” The irony of the film is in the fact that snails are inherently slow.
Turbo’s preoccupation with speed and an unlikely accident result in the transformation of his entire being. Not only does he take on the characteristics of a car, he suddently possesses incredible speed. His journey and aspiration to race and win the Indy 500 are met with hurdles. Turbo will have to put his shell heart on the line to help his friends achieve their dreams and overcome his own limitations to succeed.
As my son and I walked to school, he talked all about the “super-fast” snail, asking how he attained his lightning speed and whether or not he was going to win the race. We will have to wait until July 19th, 2013 to find out the answers to those questions! In addition to screening some footage from Turbo, we caught a sneak peek of Mr. Peabody & Sherman, scheduled for release on March 7th, 2014. Based on the characters from Peabody’s Improbable History segments of the animated TV series The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show, the film follows the story of Mr. Peabody, a talking dog who is the smartest being in the world. Sherman is his “pet” boy, and when they use his time machine, the results are disastrous. It will take them working together in time to prevent the space-time continuum from being completely destroyed. Mr. Peabody & Sherman have a new Facebook page where you’ll find the latest information regarding the film
