My daughter and I donned our Smurf hats over the weekend to celebrate the premiere of Smurfs: The Lost Village. As a product of the 80s, the Smurfs hold a nostalgic place in my heart. The number of iterations of Peyo’s Belgian comic characters is numerous, having won over the hearts of fans through film, television, and play. But this particular film introduces these classic mushroom-dwelling characters to a brand new generation. Fresh and vibrant with a host of new characters, Smurfs: The Lost Village never forgets its origins and retains the look and feel of Peyo’s original designs.
Those familiar with the original story will recall that Smurfette was created by Gargamel to capture the essence and magic of the Smurfs. Redeemed by Papa Smurf, she finds herself questioning her identity as a Smurf. It doesn’t help that she is also the only female Smurf in the village. During a seemingly ordinary day in the village, Smurfette spots a creature she believes to be a Smurf, heading into the forbidden forest. Resolved to find out who she is and where her place in the village is, she sets out on a journey into the Forbidden Forest. Wrought with adventure and the ever-present threat of Gargamel, Smurfette, Brainy, Clumsy and Heft embark on a thrilling adventure that will uncover the biggest secret in Smurf history.
Enjoying the Smurfs: The Lost Village Premiere
While the film has a vibrant aesthetic and a fun, adventurous story, it is its messages of courage and female empowerment that resonated with my daughter and I. She adored being introduced to a new set of female Smurfs, each with their own unique personality and strengths. Throughout the film, the Smurfs model teamwork, friendship and standing up for what you believe. Even young children will enjoy the film, particularly because Gargamel does not feel as menacing as he has in previous films.
Prior to the film’s premiere, the courtyard in front of the ArcLight Theatre in Culver City was transformed into Smurf Village. This carnival-inspired party featured coloring and crafts, games, a photo booth and Smurftastic eats and treats.
