When it comes to animated films, there is a certain level of expectation I walk into the theater with. I expect that irrespective of the studio, the film will be lighthearted and humorous with a feel-good message. I also hope that the characters will resonate with my kids and offer some type of positive influence. So admittedly, when I walked into the theater with my 2 kids to see Sing, I expected just that. A feel-good movie with funny characters that sing their way to stardom. But Sing is so much more than that. It is filled with humor and heart and an inspiring message of perseverance creatively packaged into a story that is accentuated by it’s score. I challenge you not to walk out of the theater singing to yourself.
Sing – Done in the Key of Fun
Starring the voice talents of Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Seth MacFarlane, Scarlett Johansson, John C. Reilly, Taron Egerton and Tori Kelly, Sing follows the story of Buster Moon, the koala owner of a grand theater now facing financial turmoil. Ever the optimist, Buster makes a last ditch effort to restore the theater as he is faced with the threat of shattered dreams. In order to restore the theater to it’s former glory, Buster sets out to produce the world’s greatest singing competition.
In the midst of a world filled with some insanely talented animal singers emerge 5: Mike, a mouse who’s croon is as smooth as his con; Meena, a teen elephant with a case of stage fright that’s as big as her voice; Rosita, a mom who’s put aside her talent to raise her 25 piglets; Johnny, a gangster gorilla looking for a fresh start; and Ash, a punk-rock porcupine looking to break free from her boyfriend to go solo.
Each contestant has story…a reason for pursuing their musical dreams. Like Buster, they are hopeful that this is the break they need to change the course of their lives. As Buster coaches each contestant, he realizes that maybe the theater isn’t the only thing that needs saving.
