My son is still too young to understand concepts like global warming. So most of the eco-education I do is based on modeling and hands-on learning. I want him to view things like recycling as a normal part of everyday life. I want him to grow up with a reverence for our environment and it’s precious resources.
We’ve planted flowers in the past, but he was too young to be overly interested in it. But a few weeks ago we planted sunflowers. My son looks at the pots where the leaves have sprouted and talks excitedly about how he planted those sunflowers which are now starting to grow.
If you’re looking for a fun, educational activity to do with your children this month (which is Earth month), consider planting a tree or a garden. Planting a tree or growing your own vegetables in a garden are simple, effective ways to help the environment. Trees minimize the effects of global warming by trapping CO2 emissions, cool your home, reduce urban runoff and capture dust particles from the air. Growing your own vegetables in a garden minimizes chemicals and pesticides, lowers emissions, and reduces the amount of trash that ends up in landfills (Practical Environmentalist).
This week, my son and I planted tomatoes (let’s see how well we did in a few weeks!) with Sesame Street’s My First Gardening Kit. Lowe’s now carries Sesame Street seeds and gardening items. The product line features familiar characters like Elmo and Abby and includes gardening totes, a mini garden kit, and a mini greenhouse kit. Children can plant watermelons, pepper, sunflowers, pumpkins, garden beans and tomatoes. My World is Green and Growing is an initiative launched by Sesame Street to support children’s innate curiosity about nature. Each of the gardening products include educational materials to teach children how fruits and vegetables begin with seeds and grow to become food. The new line also compliments Sesame Street’s Healthy Habits for Life initiative, designed to help children develop healthy lifestyles they can practice through fun, simple every day activities.
The projects are simple, affordable ($4.99-$10.99), and fun. Sesame Street has taken gardening and made it into an interactive learning experience for kids. I appreciate the activity booklets (which are in English and Spanish) designed to help parents discuss important concepts related to growing a garden. For more information or to purchase Sesame Street’s new line of gardening products visit your nearest Lowe’s!

What a cute little gardening kit! I am glad he’s enjoying it! We have planted a garden and my 2 1/2 year old loves to try and do everything we do in it!
