With Earth Day approaching very soon, children may have questions regarding the meaning of this day. Perhaps your child has heard you talk about things you do to preserve the environment, or they’ve heard about this special day from a friend or via another outlet. PBS Kids is celebrating Earth Day by helping children learn and explore ways they can take an active role in helping to sustain the earth’s resources. On April 22, the network will premier eco-themed episodes from Curious George, Super Why!, Sid the Science Kid, and more.
We got a first look at Sid the Science Kid’s Earth Day-themed episode entitled “The Dirt on Dirt.” If you and your child have never watched the show, I highly recommend checking it out. It is an animated series aimed at helping children aged 3 to 6, learn about science. (I’m singing the song in my head as I write this!) Children are very curious at this age and ask a lot of “why” questions. My son is already starting to use the “why” word! Five-year old Sid, begins each episode with a “Big Question” which drives the entire episode. The music is upbeat and the characters are fun and relatable. I like that the cast includes children from varied ethnic groups. Some of the unifying themes include the use of modern technology (they use computers), friendship and teamwork (Sid’s friends come together to answer the “Big Question”), and the importance of family (you’ll even find Sid’s grandmother in the show) . Here is a little more information about the series from the site:
“Sid the Science Kid” is a new educational animated television series using comedy to promote exploration, discovery and science readiness among preschoolers. “Sid the Science Kid” features a practical in-school science curriculum, uses music and humor to celebrate children’s natural curiosity about science in everyday life. The energetic and inquisitive Sid starts each episode with a new question and embarks on a fun-filled day of finding answers with the help of family and friends.
While many of the topics are best understood by kids at the older end of the targeted age group, younger children will appreciate the humor and lightheartedness of the show. Overall, I appreciate a show that encourages exploration and demonstrates that learning can be fun. While I don’t want to give away the entire episode…here’s the dirt on the episode premiering April 22:
Sid wants to know what makes dirt so dirty. At school, Sid and his friends discover that dirt is really important to the Earth because it helps things grow, and it’s also filled with tiny rocks, pieces of leaves, and even living things like bugs and worms!
Be sure to tune in to your local PBS Kids TV station on April 22 for all of the eco-friendly happenings!
