Lunch has always been a struggle for me, partly because I don’t prioritize it like I do breakfast and dinner. Some days, I put together a quick salad or boil some whole grain pasta and call it lunch. When I worked on the floor of our community hospital, lunch was hurried and haphazard and I got accustomed to eating in 15 minutes at times. Fortunately, I have a bit more time and when I’m completely out of ideas, I’ll head to a local restaurant or the fresh food bar at our natural market but that can get quite expensive.
Interestingly enough, I’m not the only one that often puts lunch on the back-burner (hehe). According to a recent survey, only a third of Americans reported taking a lunch beak with another third admitting to eating lunch at their desks. Sargento Cheese is working to change this on-the-go approach to lunch to help people work towards achieving some balance in their day. This year I’ve personally been working on achieving more balance and have forced myself to walk away from the computer for meals (we have a no-technology rule at the dining room table).
Take a Real Lunch is Sargento’s inspirational new initiative to help Americans take back their lunch hour. This Friday, August 9th, I’ll be at the California Plaza in LA and it may just be the first real lunch I’ve taken in a long time. If you’re local or visiting, come on down to the Plaza for samples, coupons, and more. Here are the details for Sargento’s Take a Real Lunch Experience:
When: Friday, August 9th from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm
Where: California Plaza, 350 S. Grand Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90071
Activities: Sample handcrafted sandwiches, receive product coupons and take a “real” lunch with Sargento.
This summer, Sargento has teamed up with lifestyle expert Martha McCully to offer some tips on using your lunch hour to refuel your mind and body:
1. Get back to nature: Step away from your office or computer and take a walk outside. You could bring your meal to your local park, visit a nearby fruit stand or Farmer’s Market, or simply spend some time in the courtyard of your place of employment.
2. Eat real food: It goes without saying that our bodies and brain need adequate nutrition to function properly. McCully suggests buying fresh ingredients at the Farmer’s Market or your local natural grocery store to customize your sandwich. Gourmet upgrades include heirloom tomatoes, crisp romaine lettuce or spinach, real Sargento Natural Sliced Cheese and freshly-baked whole grain bread. I personally tire of the typical sandwich and elevating it with these suggestions is a great way to take a fresh approach to lunch.
3. Exercise your options: If you have time, even a half-hour yoga or stretch class can do wonders for rejuvenating the mind and body. Check with your place of employment or local gym for class offerings.
This week, I’m committing to taking at least 3 real lunches. Will you join me?
