Robin Hood & Maid Marion: A Holiday Panto

Posted by Caryn Bailey Leave a Comment

Every year during Christmas, the Laguna Playhouse collaborates with Bonnie Lythgoe Productions to produce an original holiday “panto” or pantomime. This genre of interactive theater originated in the UK and can include songs, gags, slapstick comedy, and dancing. The stories are typically inspired by fairy tales with a twist. The very first Panto, A Snow White Christmas, debuted at the Laguna Playhouse in 2015. With theater back, the Laguna Playhouse presents Robin Hood & Maid Marion: A Holiday Panto performing through December 29, 2021.

Robin Hood & Maid Marion: A Holiday Panto

The legendary English folklore about a heroic outlaw who robs from the rich to give back to the poor gets a modern makeover twist in Robin Hood & Maid Marion: A Holiday Panto, now performing at the Laguna Playhouse. The show, designed for families, is filled with comedy, action, music, and audience participation. Adults will love the 70’s-inspired soundtrack including disco favorites like Donna Summer’s Bad Girls, The Bee Gees Jive Talkin, and Sister Sledge’s He’s The Greatest Dancer.

Robin Hood & Maid Marion is a family show, perfect for introducing children to the theater. The Laguna Playhouse’s collaboration with Lythgoe Family Productions has previously debuted familiar fables and fairy tales that are well-known and well-loved by families including Sleeping Beauty and Her Winter Knight, Peter Pan and Tinker Bell – A Pirates’ Christmas, Aladdin and his Winter Wish, and Beauty and the Beast: A Christmas Rose. Each show engages the audience with comedy, music, and dance.

The story takes place in the village of Nottingham during the 1170s. The town’s lord has died with no heir, and thus we find the Sheriff has been taking the money of the villagers. Enter Robin Hood, who vows to make things right by stealing from the Sheriff’s soldiers to give back to the owners. But the Sheriff then threatens to cancel Christmas…after all this is a holiday Panto.

Robin Hood & Maid Marion is a delightful production with plenty of comedy and music to appeal to audiences of all ages. See it at the Laguna Playhouse through December 29, 2021.
