Red, White and Blue Wine and Cheese Party

Always striving to add a sprinkling of creativity to our traditional celebrations, I decided that this year’s 4th of July party needed a gourmet twist. I absolutely love the simplicity and familiarity of barbecues, picnics, and backyard gatherings which afford families the opportunity to celebrate both the beginning of the summer season and our Independence. However, for more grown-up parties, something besides burgers might be more suitable. Using Walmart’s fresh produce, I put together a decadent Red, White, and Blue Wine and Cheese Platter that can easily be prepared in less than 30 minutes.

Wine and Cheese

Before I headed to my local Walmart, I started thinking about all of the potential red, white and blue foods that could be used to symbolize our country’s flag. Fruit is a staple for any party, particularly a Summer-themed event, and I was delighted to find red, black and green grapes, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and figs fresh and in season.  I’m definitely not a wine connoisseur, however, I do know that most cheeses should be paired with a white wine (which also doubled nicely as part of my “white” foods). Cheese and crackers/bread will also suffice for your “white” foods. In addition to the blueberries, I selected a Danish Blue cheese as a focus of the platter and satisfied by quota of “blue” foods. No wine and cheese platter is complete without nuts so I included all-natural almonds.  And for a final gourmet touch, I added fresh figs and dark chocolate with sea salt and roasted almonds. Divine!

Wine and Cheese Platter

Here is what you’ll need for this Red, White and Blue Wine and Cheese Party

1. Red Grapes (strawberries or raspberries will also work)

2. White Wine

3. Crackers or bread

4. Danish Blue Cheese

5. Layered Brie Cheese

6. Blueberries

7. Fresh figs

8. Almonds

9. Dark Chocolate

Cheese Platter

Remember that you’ll need an attractive platter for your dish, cheese slicer and a wine bottle opener. I also picked up 4th of July-themed plates and napkins which look festive and can be tossed at the end of your party.

If you plan to serve an expansive selection of wines and cheeses, you might consider using a small chalkboard to designated each variety of cheese and the wine it is best paired with. A good reference for wine and cheese pairings can be found on Gourmet Sleuth.
