As research continues to emerge regarding the link between diet and health, consumers are looking for palatable, wholesome alternatives. Over the last year our family has strived to increase our consumption of whole foods, including whole grains, and decrease the amount of additives and synthetic substances in our diet. While we have made significant changes in our dietary habits, we feel it is important to include the occasional indulgence. Even dieters need to cheat a little to stay sane.
Thanks to Mom Central, I was offered the opportunity to review Kellog’s Whole Grain Pop-Tarts, a healthier alternative to this well-known kid’s favorite. I have to confess…I’ve eaten my share of Pop Tarts. Everything in moderation right? As a kid I remember eating the crisp icing and warm strawberry jelly and tossing the crust (kids!). I had no idea what to expect when I agreed to sample these, but the verdict is in and I heart the new whole grain version. Apart from a few minor differences, I hardly noticed a change in taste or texture (although it’s been quite some time since I’ve eaten a Pop-Tart). I miss the extra frosting but I’m sure my mummy tummy does not! Whole Grain Pop-Tarts have drizzled frosting…the only noticeable difference in my opinion.
Whole Grain Pop-Tarts are currently being offered in 2 flavors…strawberry and brown sugar cinnamon. Both flavors taste just as good as I remember and provide one serving of whole grains.
So, how do the two versions compare?
Strawberry Whole Grain Pop-Tarts have fewer calories (by 10), less carbohydrates (by 2), less sugar (by 2), and more fiber (by 2).
Brown Sugar Cinnamon Whole Grain Pop-Tarts have fewer calories (by 10), less sugar (by 2), and more fiber (by 2).

Now…do you think they’ll work on a dairy-free, gluten-free version?
