Up until 3 years ago, cancer was something I read about in books and witnessed as a caregiver during my time studying for my nursing license. Because I had not known anyone personally who battled the disease, it still felt distant and removed from me. In the last couple of years, I’ve personally known at least 3-5 people diagnosed and fighting this battle, and the reality is that cancer is not for the weak. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and in honor of the 2 women I personally know who are in the midst of this battle, I encourage you to be proactive.
Many organizations will focus their efforts on raising funds and awareness for breast cancer research this month. One of my favorite bakery chains, Panera Bread, has been making and selling their Pink Ribbon Bagels since one of their franchise owners was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001. Sue Stees struggled to find information and support after her diagnosis. The idea for the Pink Ribbon Bagel originated from her desire to increase awareness and raises funds for others battling breast cancer.
Throughout the month 100% of sales on October 10th, 2014 will benefit the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation with it’s innovative breast cancer prevention research. The organization is unique in that it focuses its efforts on identifying the cause of breast cancer and how to prevent/eradicate the disease. This October is particularly exciting for the organization as it will launch a questionnaire through the Health of Women Study to document and report on the “Cost of the Cure,” and the damage that often results from breast cancer treatment.
Through the remainder of the month, 10 cents from the sale of each Pink Ribbon Bagel will be donated to the Foundation. This delicious gourmet bagel features cherry chips, dried cherries, cranberries, vanilla, honey, and brown sugar and is only available during the month of October. For a list of locations in Los Angeles, North Orange, Ventura, Riverside, Santa Barbara, and San Bernardino counties, visit the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation’s blog.
Since 2001, Panera Bread has sold more than 9 million Pink Ribbon Bagels and donated over $2 million to breast cancer organizations across the country. This year marks Sue Stees’ 30th anniversary as a breast cancer survivor so it’s particularly meaningful for the brand.
I am a longstanding fan of Panera Bread and it isn’t uncommon to find me dining with my kids at our local restaurant at least once a week. Purchasing and enjoying a Pink Ribbon Bagel is a very simple, tangible way to make a difference. For more information, visit PaneraBread.com and DrSusanLoveResearch.org.
