There are so many things I love about the Fall season…
Red, yellow, and orange leaves
A new season of my favorite shows
The approaching holiday season
The freedom to wear boots
Brisk evenings
Pumpkin Pie (and cheesecake, and muffins, and lattes, and…)
Speaking of lattes, I find that as the seasons change, so do my coffee habits. Summer’s are characterized by frozen, ice-blended coffee drinks. Winters require something warm and often holiday-ish. I alternate between brewing my own blend at home and stopping into my local coffee shop for some gal time and the latest holiday blend.
While my husband isn’t particularly brand loyal when it comes to drinking coffee, I have my preferences. Hence the amount coffee (both whole bean and ground) that currently line our kitchen counter.
Similarly, my husband prefers his coffee black or with a touch of cream, while I prefer a more generous amount of cream and some type of flavoring. As far as the coffee itself, my husband prefers a bold, strong blend while I prefer a medium roast. He also prefers to grind the beans himself and I don’t really have a preference (although I do LOVE the smell of freshly ground coffee).
And then there is the way the coffee is brewed. Awhile back, we put our espresso machine in storage in favor of the French Press, mostly because my husband prefers to capture the full flavor of the coffee (which is often lost when coffee is brewed via machine). The other advantage to using a French Press is the ability to brew coffee to any strength desired.
As you can see from the photo above, we have purchased Peet’s ground coffee in the past. If you follow me on Twitter, you might also see Katie and I “checking in” to our local Peet’s Coffee & Tea for some gal time.
Peet’s recently introduced two medium roast blends, Cafe Domingo and Cafe Solano, which are sold at grocery stores nationwide. Since it’s more affordable and more convenient to brew coffee at home, I decided to “switch out” our current blends for the Cafe Domingo. This medium roast blend has a “smooth, balanced” flavor with a hint of toffee sweetness. It’s made from 3 Latin American coffees and brews quite nicely. It’s not bitter or strong and didn’t really need any extra flavoring (I just enjoyed it with a touch of Coffee Mate’s Sweet Cream-flavored Natural Bliss). Similarly, my husband enjoyed the bold flavor and also drank it with a bit of creamer.
Because I also enjoy “cold” coffee, I decided to take some of the brew and blend it with ice, half and half, and all-natural chocolate syrup. I topped it with whipped cream and it was refreshing and delicious. (My husband doesn’t typically drink “cold” coffee so he did not try my blended creation).
Cafe Solano is Peet’s other medium roast blend. It’s described as “lively and aromatic” with floral notes and a subtle fruit essence. Because I forgot my $3.00 off coupon when I went to pick up Cafe Domingo, I decided to hold out until my next visit to purchase this blend.
