One of the many things I enjoy about film is the ability to immerse myself in new, familiar, or imagined places. While the story must be compelling, it’s often the visuals that will initially draw me in. When I saw Oz the Great and Powerful for the first time in theaters earlier this year, I knew hands down that it ranked among the most beautiful films.
Director Sam Raimi’s prequel follows the journey of Oscar Diggs, a small town circus magician aspring towards greatness. When he is swept up in a tornado, he finds himself in the Land of Oz. But his plans for fame and fortunate don’t necessarily align with the three witches he meets, who initially believe he is the wizard everyone has been expecting. Through is journey, he must discover who is good and who is evil before the Land of Oz is overtaken by the wicked witches.
Earlier this week, Disney released Oz the Great and Powerful on Blu-ray, DVD, and digital. Surprisingly, my husband and I sat down to watch it together for the first time since he never had an opportunity to see it in theaters. I personally enjoyed seeing it a second time and felt like I was able to absorb more of the detail and delve even deeper into the story. Owning a film on Blu-ray or DVD is a movie-lover’s dream because the bonus features alone are worth the price. This particular film includes never-before-seen material including “The Magic of Oz The Great and Powerful” Second Screen Feature that offers an immersive journey into the fantasy lands of Oz, James Franco’s personal story of his journey to the land of Oz, Mila Kunis’ makeup metamorphosis, a back-stage journey through the visual effects process that brought China Girl to life, an interview with Joey King (who voices China Girl), and more. The Blu-ray and DVD also include a digital copy of the film and a ticket to The Lone Ranger (redeemable online).
To celebrate the release, I’ve teamed up with Disney to offer you some engaging printable activities and games:
