Just a few days before I was to supposed to head to Walt Disney World for the very first time, I dropped my smart phone for what would be the very last time. As much as I try to deny it, I can be a bit klutzy. Factor in two small children and it is a miracle that other items in our home don’t end up facing the same fate that my smart phone did. The only positive thing to come out of that experience was a brand new iPhone!
Determined not to “break” my new iPhone, I asked several of my techie friends for their best recommendations for iPhone covers. I wanted something durable…something that would withstand drops from my kids (or myself). I honestly didn’t care what it looked like and would sacrifice style over durability.
OtterBox repeatedly came up in conversations about iPhone protection, so without hesitation, I ordered a Defender Series case in Deep Plum. As “the number 1 selling case for smartphones in the US,” I was quite impressed with how durable the case was. It was relatively easy to install and while a bit bulky, protected my phone for the 2+ years I had it. The only major complaint I had about that case was the fact that the rubber never fit properly around the bottom and it ended up stretching out and coming apart towards the end. But after repeated drops, my phone never sustained even a scratch.
With my persistent need to have the most up-to-date tech products, I finally convinced my husband to invest in the iPhone 5 last Fall once our contract was up. With a longer, slimmer design, my current OtterBox case would not fit, so I looked into getting a new case for my phone. I wasn’t surprised to find that OtterBox had already designed iPhone 5 cases, however, I was quite impressed with the new design.
There are four different case models available for the iPhone 5 including the Defender, Commuter, Reflex, and Prefix Series. I opted for the Defender Series once again for its rugged two-layer protection. Much like my previous case, the iPhone 5 Defender Series includes a built-in screen protector to prevent scratches to the face of the phone, a polycarbonate inner layer, and a silicone outer layer complete with port covers to keep out dust and dirt. This case also includes a belt clip holster, although I have never once used it.
This particular case is available in a wide variety of colors/patterns and there is an option to build your own case. I opted for the new Realtree camo in pink because the style of the case is rugged and I figured it fit well with the image.
Applying the case is not difficult, however, it might be helpful to watch this 2 minute video:
The one major feature that I feel has been improved with this case is the silicone outer layer. It offers a more secure fit and feels more durable than it did with my previous case.
The Defender Series Case start at $49.95 and area available online or at major retailers including Walmart. While pricey, it was the only case I needed in the two years I owned my previous iPhone and I imagine that I will have this case for as long as I own my current smart phone.
No compensation was received for this post. I was provided with an OtterBox case which helped facilitate the writing of this review.
