No compensation was received for this post. I was invited to visit the set of Mystery Girls, which facilitated the writing of this post.
Having lived most of my life in LA, I’ve spent plenty of time amidst the Hollywood scene. From working at a theme park/film studio, to caring for celebrities at a local hospital, I’m not easily starstruck and rather am in awe of how celebrities balance work, family, and life in the spotlight. Last week I found myself on the set of Mystery Girls, ABC Family’s newest show starring Jennie Garth and Tori Spelling. While I don’t have a lot of time to watch television, I was drawn to the show because I was an avid Beverly Hills, 90210 fan.
Mystery Girls is a lighthearted sitcom about two women who reunite 15 years after co-starring on a hit TV show ironically titled Mystery Girls. When newbie LA transplant and super fan Nick (played by Miguel Pinzon) witnesses a crime in the city of Angels, he vows to only speak to the Mystery Girls about what he has seen. Thus begins a somewhat bizarre partnership to help solve real-life mysteries.
We sat down with Garth and Spelling, who shed some light on the origin of the show, what it’s like to work together after 20 years, and how these two moms balance work and family life. After working on a Christmas movie for ABC Family, Spelling recalls that the studio was looking for comedies. “I used to be a huge fan of mysteries in the 80’s and my dad’s shows and I loved Remington Steele (Spelling).” Wanting to pair her love of mysteries with comedy, Spelling knew that no one other than Garth could realize this with her. Knowing that the show’s script was solid, Garth agreed and the two currently serve as Executive Producers of the show.
Because of their long-standing working history, Garth and Spelling found it easy to work together. “We have so much fun and it’s just really easy (Garth).” And while any two actresses could pull off a female comedy centered around friendship, Garth and Spelling have a chemistry…a bond that is the result of 20 years of friendship. “You can’t replace that…I don’t feel like anyone else could really have that back story (Spelling).”
As a busy, work-at-home mom, I’m always interested in hearing how other women achieve the balancing act. I really appreciated Garth’s simple, yet practical advice to get and USE a good calendar app (something I’m truly not great at). Not only does Garth “live by her schedules,” she maintains her commitments.
In tonight’s new episode of Mystery Girls, Joe E. Tata (“Nat” from Beverly Hills, 90210) guest-stars as Holly’s high-school principle, who hires the Mystery Girls to ensure he does not become the target of a senior prank before he retires. When Holly and Charlie go undercover at West Beverly to stop the culprit, Holly realizes this might be her chance to have the normal high school experience she wanted but never had. Desperate to fit in, Holly becomes obsessed with popularity, momentarily forgetting about the case.
Admittedly, I am not a huge fan of Sitcoms in general, and this one I found to be frivolous and over-done. But if you are looking for a show that’s indulgent with gratuitous laughs, see Mystery Girls tonight on ABC Family at 8:30 PM ET/PT.
