Growing up, my parents instilled within me the importance of placing a high value on my education. I loved school…so much so that I went back to obtain my Master’s degree several years ago. I can’t imagine intentionally skipping school, but nationwide, it is an important issue that must be addressed. Even now as my son attends preschool, I strive to foster a love of learning within him. I strive to ensure that school is a positive experience for him.
I recently learned that in New York City, one out of every five students missed a month or more of school last year. While this may not seem significant, three out of four students who are chronically absent in the sixth grade (for example) never graduate from high school. Absenteeism is a problem and as a parent, it’s important for me to be aware of it’s effect on children. The first six weeks of the school year are the most crucial for establishing strong attendance…and Old Navy recognizes that fact.
Last month, Old Navy in partnership with Mayor Bloomberg’s Task Force on Truancy and Chronic Absenteeism, asked NYC Public School students to pledge to go to school every day. Three hundred students with the best and most improved attendance from the 25 schools participating in the campaign were rewarded with $50 shopping sprees, a winter coat, and visits from Mets shortstop Jose Reyes. The partnership will continue through the school year with a surprise finale at the end of the year. Old Navy will give gift cards to all students at the four schools who participated in the kick-off if they achieve perfect attendance at the end of the year.
As a mom, it’s important for me to hear about the efforts the brands I shop from are engaging in. While I’ve been shopping at Old Navy for many years, learning about their support for education reaffirmed my commitment to the brand.
Since this is the last shopping weekend before Christmas, I thought I’d show you some of the great buys you can find at Old Navy.
